Non-Touring: Try the Trend Tutorial

Have you ever seen a beauty trend on a celeb (or on Instagram) and wondered if it would REALLY look like that if you tried it? That's what I'm doing today with my new series TRY THE TREND. Whatever the latest beauty trend is, I'll try it here to see if it's practical and if I can get similar results.

If you have been into makeup long enough, you'll realize that nothing is really new. Old techniques are refreshed, stand by looks are given new names, and I think that's the case with today's trend. By the way, not into trends? Remember this is all in good fun. Don't knock it 'til ya try it, right?

Up first is a new trend I read about on Marie Claire.com called Non-touring. And it's supposed to be the hottest trend this summer.

What is "Non-Touring?"
  • Think light coverage and glowy skin
  • No contour, no heavy full-coverage foundation
  • Perfectly illuminated skin that shows off your features
  • Not strobing, as strobing involves a heavier highlight and more full-coverage makeup. Make strobing lite is a better way to think of it?
  • 3 steps
Glowing skin that doesn't look overdone, just natural

Non-Touring Tutorial:
  1. Use a primer that's hydrating, not mattiyfing. I personally say skip this step.
  2. Apply a tinted moisturizer or BB cream or CC cream. You don't want full coverage. Keep it light. Apply concealer to spots if needed.
  3. Apply highlight to the high points of the face, like above the apples of cheeks, chin, forehead, cupid's bow, the bridge of the nose, etc. There is no contour. Choose a highlighter that works for your skin tone. I used champagne.
Below are high end and drugstore alternatives to try this trend:
High end products to try: Too Faced Rx primer, IT Cosmetics CC Cream, The Balm Mary Lou Manizer

Drugstore options: Milani Prime Perfection, Garnier BB Cream--I use the original for my dry skin, Maybelline Highlight/Contour kit

Want to see a quick demo of the technique? Check it out below:

Would you try "non-touring?"
What trend would you like to see me try next?

Extra Elle:
  • Speaking of higlighting products (my fave) last week I got the Pat McGrath highlighting kit. I'm not doing a review on it since it's so pricey, but it is SO good. I shared a preview on Snapchat.
  • Finally went to the Dr. so I am slowly feeling better. I apologize for my pics today--I look awful, so please excuse my swollen sinus infection face.

Loving Lately: March Beauty Faves

Hey you! Happy Friday! I hope your week flew by fast. Today I'm sharing a few of my beauty favorites of the month. Let me know your faves or what you'd like to try.

Cupcakes And Cashmere for Formula X Polishes--Consider your spring and summer shades sorted. We've got Peach Tea (I'm wearing it in the video below), Haute Sauce, and Latte Run. I love them separate and together.

Makeup Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation Stick--Foundation sticks have a special place in my heart, because the very first expensive beauty item I ever bought from Sephora was a foundation stick. That was 15 years ago! I thought I was so cool, hehe.

Foundation sticks are generally for oily skin and for those want lots of coverage, but this one works so well on my dry skin. By the way, the rest of these pics will be gifs because I am bound and dang determined to get you to watch a video of mine. ;)

Zac Posen for MAC Lipsticks in Dangerously Red and Darling Clementine--Spring has me all in love with a bright lip and how gorgeous are these? They are matte but creamy. I'm in love, basically. The red is more of a pinky red. I'm wearing both in the video below. Why? Because I can, pretty much.

Hard Candy Velvet Mousse Liquid Lipstick in Cherry Blossom--I am still on my matte liquid lipstick kick. This one is affordable and surprisingly really good for the price. Get it online or at Walmart.

Sephora Give Me Some Nude Lip--I saw this on a blog (PLEASE let me know if it was you--nothing irks me more than when someone tries to take credit for something else) but it was sold out, so I didn't retain the knowledge. Cut to my usual trolling and scrolling of the Sephora Just Arrived section. I saw this and snagged it. Inside are some goodies for several shades of nude. Lip gloss, lip sticks, lip liners...you're covered. And the box is shaped like a pair of lips. I mean!

Pixi Beauty sent me some goodies--you can get them at Target. The Hydrating Milky Mist is half the price of the Tatcha one and refreshes and hydrates dry skin.

The Nourishing Lip Polish treats lips with gentle exfoliation and moisturization.

The Book of Minimal Makeup has everything you need to enhance a "no makeup-makeup" look: bronzer, highlight, blush, and shadows. This is SO good for travel, too.

Tartlette in Bloom palette by Tarte--I finally caved and got this a few months ago after seeing it on everyone's blog. I do share what it looks like in the video, but since it has been covered so much online, you can see it on the video.

Too Faced Sweet Peach--I shared this yesterday, and it's already a favorite!

And finally, here's the video below with MORE favorites than pictured here:

What have you been loving lately?

Extra Elle: Happy Easter, y'all! I'm headed to my hometown to see my family.

November Beauty Faves & Chit Chat

Spot the E?

Happy December! Did I just type that? *checks calendar* Yes, another month has flown by, so let's do a recap for November. How was your November?

First, how cute is my mug? My youngest sis bought it for me for my birthday--see the pumpkin and the E? I thought it was appropriate to end the month and the season with.

Can't view at work? Subscribe HERE so you can watch anytime!

In case you've never watched one of my Chit Chat videos, I review the month's highs and lows and share my beauty faves.

It's only 4 minutes, plus Charlie is at the end, hehe.

November was a bittersweet month for me. I share more in the video including my Thanksgiving and more.

So yes, the month was very hard, but I'm glad I made it. Something that definitely cheered me up this month is this Box of Sunshine--see how nearly everything is yellow? A huge thanks to LaNae for sending that! Isn't that sweet?

And now for some beauty faves--I kept it short this month, but would really like to include more faves--let me know what you think:

November Beauty Faves:

  • Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base--excellent for dry skin
  • Ofra Liquid Lipstick in Laguna Beach--Very matte lip color that lasts all dang day
  • MAC Please Me--Gorgeous matte nude and look at that shiny purple tube?
  • No. & Lift & Luminate Foundation--Use with a dampened beauty blender for glowing skin.
  • Rimmel 107--Who doesn't love this berry color? Since I'll be wearing red a lot in December, I wanted a change for the month.
  • QTica Extending Top Coat--I got this at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. It works SO well. Love it.
How was your November?

October Beauty Favorites

I'm writing this from my couch, snoring pup on my right, and realizing that it's only Wednesday. I want it to be the weekend because I'm exhausted. But then I want time to slow down, because my favorite month of the year is almost over. October was a good month, but too fast.

Here are my beauty favorites:

The end for an everyday lipstick/I-wish-my-lips-were-really-this-color is over. This is Sophia Loren No. 1 for Dolce Gabbana. It is gorgeous.

It looks light and perfect for day time.

Sally Hansen Fall Polishes--These have pretty much been on my nails for the past couple of months. Straight from the runway for NYFW, these are the some of the shades they used. These are perfect for fall, just saying. The bottom right three shades are sheer, making them day-time friendly!

And here's the part of the show where I decided to just take one big pic of the rest of my faves.
  • Cailyn O!Wow Brush--This brush does everything from makeup to blush to moisturizer. It is so soft and give the most beautiful finish.
  • Olivia Palermo for Ciate Smoky Palette--You want the perfect fall palette with beautiful buttery satin shimmers and matte shadows? This is it. The quality is that of Lorac Pro. You can see how well-loved this palette has been.
  • Makeup Geek Brushes--I bought some face and eye brushes and LOVED ALL of them. Soft and great quality.
  • Colgate Optic White Platinum--After the whole charcoal debacle that left my teeth YELLOW, I was instantly thrilled with the results. I posted before/after pics below--click on the pic to make it bigger. The after pic is exactly 3 minutes after using the toothpaste just once!! Thanks Kiki for letting me know about it!

I talked about this a little on Monday, but making videos is something I love to do. In this one, I'm giving a recap of my life for the month, sharing my favorites, and hate-its. Check it out:

The main reason to watch? Charlie is in his Halloween costume at the end and it is ADORABLE. Don't believe me? Just watch! ;)

What are your beauty faves for the month?

Extra Elle:

  • Still behind on everything, so hang in there y'all! I am slowly getting caught up.
  • Although it's been rainy all week, I have been enjoying the brief cool temps and seeing the leaves change.

Ipsy October 2015

Um, how is it the last week in October? I swear the month just started! Anyway, before I begin, I just wanted to thank you for your comments on this post yesterday (I had another post you might have missed). It's not easy opening yourself up sometimes, but I'm glad I did. I know some of you refuse to read a post that is sponsored, (huge post on this coming soon), so I thank those of you who did.

Now where was I?

Ah yes, OCTOBER ending. My fave month of the year. I will probably mention this a few more times this week.

So this month's ipsy bag was titled "Alter Ego" with one side being patent black and the other a gold lame'. Here's what I got:

MicaBeauty ipsy EXCLUSIVE Cream Eyeshadow in Bronze
  • This light-weight, long-wear, creamy eyeshadow by MicaBeauty is truly one of a kind! It’s ultra-pigmented, has super-smooth consistency, and creates a high performance color sweep that will last like new from morning to night!
  • This product isn't sold in stores- it's exclusive for ipsters!
    • Very pigmented

Peter Lamas Exfoliating Pumpkin Facial Scrub
  • The Exfoliating Pumpkin Facial Scrub cleanses and polishes skin using a powerful combination of natural ingredients to reveal an illuminating, flawless complexion. The perfect dose of pumpkin just in time for October!

theBalm Cosmetics Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long-Lasting Liquid Lipstick
  • theBalm introduces a truly loyal long-lasting liquid lipstick—Meet Matt(e) Hughes. This long-wearing formula has a comfortable matte finish with no commitment issues. This matte vanilla mint liquid lipstick is stuck on you without feeling clingy!
  • Long-wearing matte finish/Comfortable, buildable coverage/Vanilla mint flavor
    • I love liquid lipsticks (post coming next week) so I don't mind the dry matte.
    • The shade was very natural-looking and I'd like to try more.

Beauty Without Cruelty Fragrance Free Hand and Body Lotion
  • This lotion moisturizes, softens, and protects your skin. Shea butter, jojoba and kukui nut oil combined with aloe vera soothe and replenish your skin to keep it looking youthful & vibrant.
  • Paraben-free/Cruelty-free/100% Vegan-Vegetarian
    • Nice, light unscented lotion that sensitive skin would like

EmitĂ© Make Up PROFESSIONAL SLANT TWEEZER
  • This is a professional angled tweezer in quality steel. It applies the perfect amount of tension and maximum precision.
    • I couldn't get this out of the package. I had to use another set of tweezers to get it out! I found them to be cheap looking, but they worked.
TEMPTU S/B Highlighter in Champagne Shimmer
  • Silicone-based highlighter brings a natural radiance to the complexion with colors designed to highlight and emphasize eyes, cheeks and other features. Goes on sheer, but can be layered for intensity and mixed for a customized luminous finish. Designed for versatility, S/B Highlighter can be applied by fingertips, brush or sponge.
  • Long lasting for all-day wear/Oil free, non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic/Sheer, buildable color
    • I used this in my airbrush as well as fingers and sponge. It is very pigmented and VERY long lasting. Super glittery but it looks amazing in pics.
Extra Elle:
  • I had planned on an additional post today, but I'm exhausted. One of the kids I take care of broke her leg--she's too little for crutches so she has to be carried everywhere. I'm headed to work a few hours earlier and staying later to help. Therefore, responses to your amazing emails and comments will be a bit delayed. I love y'all!

My Everyday Makeup Routine

In case you missed this post, I asked for blog feedback, and a couple of you wanted more makeup tutorials--you got it! This is my everyday makeup routine.  I shared this as a guest post last month, but thought you would like seeing it. This is great for daytime looks, natural looking-makeup, and beginners. Plus, I've got something for all budgets.

First, I prime and prep my skin with the Smashbox Pore Minimizer Primer. I like this one because it helps hide pores. Next I apply foundation--my skin is on the drier side--so I love the glow this Giorgio Armani Silk Foundation gives me. Then it's time for concealing my dark circles, and I suggest Bobbi Brown. It's a great corrector and comes in many shades.

Drugstore Options:

  • NYX Pore Filler
  • Covergirl Stay Luminous Foundation
  • Wet N Wild Fergie Come Correct Concealer

For an everyday look, I keep the eye shadow to a minimum. I love this Too Faced Natural Matte Palette because it offers so many looks. I pat the lightest shade (Silk Teddy) on the lid. Then, I sweep some of the shade Strapless into the crease and blend. I smudge a little of the shade Risque under the lower lash line.

Drugstore Options:

  • Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral Matte Palette (this one is pricey for drugstore, but I don't own many drugstore matte palettes I like. I would also suggest L'Oreal Nude Palettes)

I then curl lashes, add a Lancome mascara and a Sonia Kashuk liner to my upper lashes. My brows are naturally full so I use Loreal Stylist Brow Plumper to put them in place. I add a little Becca highlighter, a sweep of MAC peach blush, and a peachy gloss from Japonesque.

Drugstore Options:

  • L'Oreal Miss Manga mascara
  • Jordana liner (Sonia Kashuk is at Target and still considered drugstore)
  • Wet N Wild Reserve Your Cabana Highlighter
  • Jordana Blush Peach Blossom
  • NYG Gloss in Napoleon

And if you want to see this effortless look in action from start to finish, then check out my video below:

What's your everyday makeup routine?

Extra Elle:
  • This is my third year of getting invited to NYFW and not going. I like watching the streams of them online instead. Maybe next year! #introvertsuniteseparately
  • After seeing it everyone's blog, I decided to get The Royal We, after Kate said it was $3.99 on Kindle. It was a quick, lovely read!
  • Charlie and I had an al fresco dinner at an Italian restaurant near my house yesterday. He is a "people person", er, dog, and I'm very quiet. I swear he gets recognized everywhere we go.

August Beauty Faves Plus Ipsy

Hey you! How was your weekend? Mine was full of ups and downs! I cannot believe this is the last day of August. Craziness. But I want to talk about something else for a bit before getting into my monthly faves. I started my Coffee & Chit Chat series in January of 2014, to share more of my life, to show there's actually someone behind the words you read, behind the pics you see. While I absolutely adored making those videos, it turned out you didn't, and so this is my last one. Thank you everyone who tuned in and commented.

So now I will turn these videos into a monthly favorites! Check it out below:

And here are a few beauty faves I've enjoyed this past month:

August Ipsy Bag: This month's theme was Prep School and I loved everything I got! It's $10 a month and you can use my code here.
  • Trust Fund Polish
  • Marc Anthony Argan Oil
  • Hikari Lip Gloss--This is what I was wearing in this Insta pic.
  • Marsk Brush
  • Doucce eyeliner

PCA Skin CliniCalm 1%--I get messages and emails weekly about irritated skin and this is the cream I recommend. This is wonderful for psoriasis, eczema, poison oak/ivy/sumac, rashes, etc. http://www.pcaskin.com/clinicalmtm-1-3.html

My next fave is this Glow Tonic Exfoliating Toner I received from Pixi. It has 5% glycolic acid but didn't irritate my skin, it just made it feel amazing. Get it at Target.

It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Romantic Palette--This is the followup I was sent to the original It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty palette (I recently gave one away) and I'm wearing it in the video above. It has 14 brand-new matte shades and a transforming pearl shade. Get it here.

Frank Body--This Australian crurelty-free brand has been featured on the blog before for their famous coffee body scrub. They've recently released a line of skin care, including a moisturizer (very light), a creamy face cleanser, a creamy face scrub (smells like coffee!), and a fabulous body balm.

How was your August?

Extra Elle:
  • I was on my way to attend a blogger brunch Saturday when I had a car issue so I ended up not going. Turns out it was actually on SUNDAY.
  • I got lots accomplished over the weekend and managed to squeeze in a Target and Ikea trip!
  • Happy 3rd birthday to my niece Maddy yesterday AND congrats that she's going to be a big sister! Yay for future niece #3!
  • VMA's...I...have...no...words...
Don't forget:

FabFitFun: Summer Edition & July Ipsy Reviews

I have a bunch of beauty to share today--are you ready? Let's kick it off with one of my fave sub boxes, FabFitFun--a lifestyle box, as the title suggests. It's released seasonally and is $49.95 per box. Sounds pricey, right? But the value is over $275! Let's see what's in the Summer Box:

FabFitFun Summer 2015:

  • FFF X CosmoBody Jump Rope--This comes with workout videos as well on the FFF website. You can burn around 150 calories in a 10 min session of jumping rope! $14
  • Everyday Wireless Speaker--One thing I love about FFF is that you get you choose certain items. This also came in teal but I chose pink. This is a wireless speaker (up to 30 feet), a latch for on-the-go-sound, FM radio, and hands-free speaker phone. $29.99
  • Gorge I'll Make You Look Amazing Daily Spray--Awesome leave-in conditioner with a yummy scent. $24.95
  • Hello Konjac Cleansing Sponge--I'm a huge fan of these. It's a sponge from vegetable fibers that softens when saturated. I use it for the KP on my arms. $12
  • Vaseline Aloe Soothe Spray Moisturizer--Spray-on lotion. I already use this and love it. $7.99
  • Inkling Scents Sultry Roll-On Perfume--Alcohol-free pure oil fragrance of sandalwood, white amber, vanilla, and more. I love it and it passed the "will it give Elle a headache?" test. $25
  • Tarte LipSurgence Lip Gloss--Love a lip crayon and love these--I don't have this shade, but did get to pick it out ahead of time. Check out the video to see the color on me. $19
  • Scratch Nail Wraps--Haven't used this pack but have used this brand before and loved them. $12
  • Headspace 3 Month Sub--A celeb-fave, this app gives guided meditations. Want me to try it? Let me know and I will report back. $38.85
  • Wren 14k Gold & Black Sapphire Necklace--I'm wearing this in the video, so be sure to watch to see it up close. This was another item we got to choose. It's a small moon (heart and stars were other choices) with a tiny sapphire. $100. Yes--$100! Worth it right there!
Overall: Very pleased with this month's box, with the necklace, lip crayon, speaker, and sponge being big hits for me. Highly Recommend! FOR $10 OFF, please use this link.

Ipsy July 2015: Summer Lovin'

  • Coolway Beachy Salt Spray--Perfect for creating beachy waves and natural styles with a non-sticky, matte finished look. Formulated with Dead Sea salts for additional mineral nourishment.--haven't tried this yet, but have been a Coolway fan for several years (if you're bored you can search for my really old Coolway post from when I took blog pics with my flip phone. HA!)
  • Jelly Pong Pong Cosmetics 2-in-1 Shadow/Liner--This uniquely formulated crayon doubles as an eyeliner for thick, precise lines as well as a perfectly-blended eye shadow. It worked fine but not a must-have for me.
  • tarte deluxe Amazonian clay waterproof bronzer--
Two Tarte products this month! I already have the full size of this and love it. I use it a lot in the summer.
  • Eau Thermale Avène Cleanance Gel Soapless Cleanser--This is a foaming cleanser that worked great but I think oily skin would like it better than my dry skin did.
  • Be A Bombshell Cosmetics Lip Balm--Hydrating formula to leave lips feeling silky smooth with a hint of color. I got French Kiss, and it pretty much has no pigment. I like it fine but I tend to only wear lip balm at night.
Overall: feeling kinda meh this month. No big complaints, but I have enough shadow/liners to last me a lifetime. I do love the ikat-print bag! Ipsy is $10 a month, and here's a code if interested!

ReNu Diamond Microderm System--This is by Pulsaderm, a fave beauty tool brand of mine. I've featured them three times before. And this one follows suit. I LOVE it. Love.

What's In My Beauty Bag? June

Time for me to bring out my beauty bag and show you what's new! And y'all, I have so much to share! I am only sharing my faves out of the products I was sent from the past few months.  Y'all know I wouldn't waste my time sharing something that wasn't good! Now, let's open up the bag and see what's inside:

Hard Candy Sassy Eyes--I know a lot of you like drugstore shadows, so I thought I'd share this new kit from Hard Candy. There are 3 of these with each tin having 9 shadows, primer, a liner, applicator, and use instructional card. Great for teens just getting into makeup and those who want a more natural eye shadow look. $8 Walmart

Homemade Bath Bombs, Salts & Scrubs--If you've read this blog for about 5 minutes, you'll know I love a good diy, and this book has over 300 of them. Made of all-natural ingredients, these bath additions elevate your soak and help with common ailments. There are no pictures, but the recipes are great. $14.95 ulyssespress.com

Japonesque--They're one of my fave beauty brands for several reasons--the products are great quality and I love the unique packaging.

  • Essential Brush Set--just the essentials in a cute travel case
  • Pro Cut Crease Brush & Pro Crease Blending Brush--2 new brushes that are a must-have. I use these every day.
  • Solid Brush Cleanser--Cleansing your brushes AND sponges is so much faster with this and it leaves them smelling nice, too.
  • Velvet Touch Blushes in 03 and 06--Look at those beauties below! My favorite summer blush is 3. It's a gorgeous coral with a golden undertone.
  • Velvet Touch Shadow Palette 02--An awesome nude palette--love this when I travel!
$20 and up ULTA.com

NYC Strip Me Off Base Coat--Raise your hand if taking off glitter polish is the worst! Well now I've got an easy solution with this peel-off base coat. I can remember using peel-off polishes as a kid (I would try to make my own with watered-down glue) and this reminds me of that. Simply apply a genourous coat and allow to dry. It will turn clear. Then apply polish, like glitter polish. To remove, peel away! BONUS: I like to use this AROUND my nail before doing watermarble or ombre nails. Makes cleanup so easy and is a great deal! $1.99, mass retailers

Mirabella Colour Luxe Lip Gloss--Sneak peek time! These new shades in Sleek, Polish, and Glossed are soft and pretty. They give oil-rich intense hydration with a luminous shine.  Glossed (coral) is my fave and I like to use it and Polish on top of my fave lipsticks. They smell amazing and are so much prettier in person (which is why I don't like doing lip swatches). Coming in July $26 at professional salons and mirabellabeauty.com

SinfulColors Summer 2015--I had to end this with one of my fave drugstore polish brands! There are 29 hues that range from spicy reds, oranges, glitter as well as appliques. These are $1.99 and are found at drugstores.

Pictured: Otaku Anime, Maroon Fine (I'm wearing it in my video from last week), Pink Ansen, Fuji Fuji, Writing on the Wall (two coats and I made it extra pigmented on the bottom to show the intensity), Paste-erd (two coats with more intensity on the sides)

Which ones would you like to try?

Extra Elle:
  • I had to get a new planner--I'm old school, so I write it all down, and would be lost without it. I got one from Target. As much as I love everyone's EC ones, they are just too cluttered for me. I know, so boring!
  • I'm on Snapchat--see my day at work, my life, and a smidge of beauty. Search for Ellesees.
  • Rebecca Minkoff + Karen Walker Sunglasses Giveaway
  • Splash Into Summer Giveaway
  • Happy birthday to my step-dad!
