Coffee, Tea, & Hot Chocolate Hacks

Cozy pjs, a crackling fire, a good movie or a book, and a hot beverage...the makings of a perfect evening (or an entire wishful weekend!). But wait--before you put down the computer and start making a drink, check out some of my favorite hacks to change up your usual coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. There's something for just about everyone!

For my tea drinkers, you've got to try making your own sugar cubes! It is SO easy and makes a cute decoration for tea or as a gift. You can use any type of sugar you want, like raw and brown sugar. Next, choose your shapes. I used small silicone molds and small cookie cutters--for Christmas I've done trees, candy canes, snowflakes, and gingerbread men. Mix 1 part sugar with one fourth of water and press into molds. Let dry over night. Remove and serve (or store in air-tight container). BONUS HACKS: Add flavoring to these, like vanilla or peppermint. I've added food coloring too--lightest colors work the best.

A way to enhance any drink is to add a tasty candied rim. I've used finely crushed candy canes, colored sugar, and nonpareils (pictured above) to decorate. Simply pour your candy into a bowl or saucer or plate that is bigger than the rim of your mug or glass. Dip the rim into something to make the candy stick, like water, cream, icing (no judging!), chocolate, honey, etc. then dip the coated rim into the candy.

Marshmallows and hot cocoa are just meant to be together. But instead of the traditional ones, try Christmas Peeps (they have all sorts of shapes) or these Gingerbread ones (not Peeps). They really taste like gingerbread, fyi. Tons of whipped cream, optional.

Remember those cookie cutters I mentioned in the first hack? You can reuse them to make a decorative top on your cream. Simply place on top and add cocoa. If you want to do a lot of these quickly, I suggest tracing your design (mine's a candy cane) onto paper (I've even used a disposable drink cup lid) and cutting it out and then placing over the top. Dust your cocoa over it and your drink automatically looks fancy. Aaand because I cannot make any of that fancy latte art with frothed milk!

Speaking of the top of the drink, if you're a fan of whipped cream, I've got an easy recipe for caramel sea salt. You can use store bought or make your own, like I did. Just add a couple of drops of caramel flavoring, pinch of sea salt, your whipped cream, and mix together before adding a dollop onto your drink. Drizzle caramel sauce and extra sea salt if desired. I usually make enough for a few servings and keep in the fridge.

Sticking a candy cane in a drink is something we've all done, right? But let's make it extra festive this year and try a candy cane twist or spoon. I'm so glad I found these at Walmart (and Michaels) because I've tried to diy my own versions in the past, and let's just say it was a disaster. How cute are these? BONUS HACK: Dip these in chocolate! Add nonpareils! Ok, I just want another excuse to use the nonpareils. Btw I've used the spoon in my tea and loved it.

Here's the spoon and my peppermint mocha. I added crushed candy cane and chocolate sauce at the top because I could. I cannot cook or bake worth a dang flip, so this is how I contribute to the Christmas desserts.

Here's the peppermint twist in a peppermint white hot chocolate. Special thanks to my friends who volunteered to drink the "props" so they wouldn't go to waste.

Which hacks would you like to try?

3 Tips to Shake Up Summer

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Starbucks through their partnership with POPSUGAR. While I was compensated by POPSUGAR to write a post about Starbucks, all opinions are my own.

Tired of doing the same thing over and over this summer? It’s time to shake things up with three of my favorite “Shake Up” ideas and beauty tips to make a regular summer day extra fun!

    1- Pool

Shake Up: Make your pool the place to be for board games with family or friends. It's a fun change of atmosphere--trust me! I'm currently into playing lots of Mexican Train Dominoes and team trivia games. Don't forget lots of yummy snacks and tasty treats, like the Starbucks Teavana® Shaken Iced Blackberry Mojito Tea Lemonade™. It is my favorite drink right now and is pictured above.

Beauty Tip: Summer is the time to finally learn a cute no-heat hairstyle, like a fishtail braid. And it works for in or out of the pool!

    2-Reading

Shake Up: Reading on the couch is a relaxing summer pastime that you can do any time of the year. But since it's summer, why not take that fun outdoors? A hammock can be an affordable way to shake up your summer reading. Tell me, what book is on your must-read list for summer? And since you're outside, a cooling beverage like the Starbucks Teavana® Shaken Iced Black Tea Lemonade™ is a must. It's just not summer for me unless I have Starbucks, am I right?

Beauty Tip: Before you post that #hammockselfie, make sure your toes look cute! Neons or bright colors will look awesome! Nude or white polishes are very in for summer for nails, too.

    3-Movies

Shake Up: Instead of going out to the movies, why not make a memory and watch a movie outdoors? Watching movies under the stars is an annual favorite of mine. If you don't know anyone with a projector, try renting one for the night. Hang up a white sheet as your screen and have blankets and pillows for watching. Pop the popcorn (what are your favorite movie snacks?) and grab a refreshing Starbucks Teavana® Shaken Iced Tea. Since I'm a Georgia girl, it will be the Starbucks Teavana® Shaken Iced Peach Green Tea Lemonade™ (pictured on right). Have you tried these yet? Which flavor is your favorite?

Beauty Tip: Shake up your makeup by rocking a bright lip this summer and toning down the rest of your look. While orange lips are huge right now, a bright coral lip is easier to wear.

How do you Shake Up Summer?

Elle's All Day Beauty Tools With Neutrogena (Giveaway)

These products were provided to me by Neutrogena® . Thoughts and opinions are my own.

Think about all of your activities in a typical day--what if you had an all day beauty kit that could take you from one activity to the next? Neutrogena® and ABC’s hit show Nashville created an exclusive 3-part digital series, Nashville All Day Beauty, featuring Hayden Panettiere. Whether she’s performing, enjoying a night out, or just kicking back with friends, this series gives us a glimpse inside Hayden’s daily life in Music City and the Neutrogena® products that help her maintain her flawless glow. Check it out here.

Inspired by the products that Hayden uses to look and feel beautiful during her days, I wanted to let you in on one of my days--from day to night! Check out my All Day Beauty Tools Kit from Neutrogena that I use for every part of my day:

Two facts about this pic: I love mint and here I am with no makeup, wearing a shirt that's 20 years old. Um.

Check out that snazzy blog! Charlie is over the sun and is hiding out!

Morning:
  • I start my day with a cup of coffee, endless emails, and commenting on blogs.
  • After an hour or two of this, Charlie wakes up, and taps me three times, signaling it's time for our morning walk. It's his 4th birthday today, by the way!
  • Since it's daylight in the mornings when we walk, I make sure to put on my Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture Sunscreen (don't forget the hands, too!) before heading out. It's perfect for dry skin, but check out other formulas for your skin type. I know the walk is over when Charlie heads for the shade. ;)
  • But it's time to get ready for work! I take a shower using the classic Rainbath Refreshing Bath & Shower Gel. I debate washing my hair--the Triple Moisture line is awesome--but decide to do it later.

My All Day Beauty Tools from Neutrogena, me and this amazing bubble blaster, and the 4 year old's rainbow

Noon:
  • I'm so lucky that I get to dress super casual for work. I'm a nanny to an awesome 4 year old and 1 month old. We are always running around from activity to activity, so my beauty routine varies. Today, I knew we were going to be outside--a lot--after an unpredictable winter, we grab every opportunity we can. I kept my makeup very simple today, with the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Primer--it has SPF 15 and can be worn with or without makeup. I added foundation, mascara, and finished the look with one of my FAVORITE lip crayons, the MoistureSmooth Color Stick, in Bright Berry. Then I threw my hair into a quick fishtail braid. If you'd like a tutorial, let me know!
  • Here's a peek into my busy day: We headed to the park for a picnic (baby sis is at home with her parents) and play. I added more of the Oil-Free Moisture Sunscreen before our bubble popping adventures. Bubble popping is the 4 year old's specialty. She was not into the picnic on the blanket nor taking pics, but she thought it was hilarious I was using the timer and trying to smile AND not look awkward. Fun day.

Waiting on dinner (turkey burger and fries) and then The Grand Budapest Hotel--I loved it!

Night:
  • I head home, walk Charlie, and start getting ready before dinner and a movie. Before applying foundation I again used the Healthy Skin Primer, but for my eyes I used the Neutrogena Crease Proof Shadow, which instantly brightens my eyes. Next, I took the Nourishing Eyeliner in the outer corner in a sideways V, then blended it with the smudge tip, giving my eyes that almond shape. Thanks to celeb makeup artist Amy Oresman for the tip! Once again, I used the MoistureSmooth Color Stick. I'm making it my mission to get one of every color.
  • I walk Charlie one last time and then it's time for wind down. Before showering, I remove my makeup with the Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover--it even gets rid of waterproof mascara with no oily residue. I like it because I have super sensitive eyes and it doesn't irritate them.
  • Shower time! Rainbath again and this time I wash my hair with the Triple Moisture Cream Lather Shampoo, skipping the conditioner but instead I use the Deep Recovery Hair Mask. I agree with celeb hair stylist Sam Leonardi's suggestion of using plastic wrap around your mask-covered hair to further intensify the moisture. I've done that for years and it works. What I find so crazy is how much my natural wave is enhanced and how much frizz is gone. Try this!
  • I end the night at midnight after finishing the next day's post. A sleepy Charlie is passed out on my pillow and he sighs when I move him. Does your dog sleep on your pillow, too?
  • All in all, a fun and busy day!

So that's just a peek into my day, and how I use tools from Neutrogena for all day beauty.
And now FIVE of you will get All Day Beauty Kits similar to mine!

Simply leave a comment telling me a Neutrogena product you love or want to try.
Also, leave me a valid email to contact you! You may enter twice if desired.
The winner will be chosen May 18, 2014.

Toast It and Post It With Tiziano! Win The Ultimate Party!

I love to entertain, and yesterday I had a little get together with three of my girlfriends. All of us are big UGA football fans, and the UGA vs. FL game is one of the biggest of the year, so it was a perfect occasion. I didn't want it to be a like a regular football party. I wanted it to be a relaxed, fun evening, with light hor d'oeuvres. Luckily, Tiziano Wine sent me some Piniot Grigio and Prosecco to try. They've got an awesome contest going on, which I'll get to in a moment. Onto the party! This took me a few minutes to prepare and I was able to do this very inexpensively.

First, I started with decor. I used autumn as my inspiration, and purchased these cute napkins and plates that were on clearance. I grabbed an autumn mix of flowers for a couple of dollars, and used a wine decanter as my vase, fitting with the Tiziano wines! I used trays from the dollar store to display the food.

For food, I served filo cups strawberry cream topped with a strawberry slice, and cups with black pepper and chive cream cheese. There were crackers and cheese cubes, which went well with the Tiziano Pinot Grigio. Of course, there had to be a reference to the South, with boiled peanuts. Have you ever had them? I also had veggies and hummus. I purchased mini brownies that I topped with sea salt for dessert. The brownies were a perfect companion to the Tiziano Prosecco.

Pinot, cheese, crackers

Sea Salt brownies and Prosecco

Food and drinks!

We all loved the Pinot and the Prosecco from Tiziano. They were delicious! The latter received the highest score in the entire sparkling wine category! You can find where to purchase Tiziano here.

About to start the party! And time for dessert!

But what about the game? After a great lead in the beginning, it became a nail-biter at the end. Luckily, the Dawgs squeaked by and WE WON! Charlie was worn out at the end, as you can see in the bottom right photo. Also, note me supposed to be smiling, but distracted, as usual!

How they arrived--so gorgeously packaged!
My #TiztheMoment wine stopper, and info on the contest!

Tiziano has a contest called Toast It and Post It, that ends on November 7, so HURRY! All you have to do is follow @TizianoWines on Instagram and post a photo of your favorite Tiziano Wine Moment on Ig or FB. Be sure to hashtag #TiztheMoment. And that's it! Extra points are given for featuring Tiziano in the photo.

So what are you waiting for?
Post your favorite Tiziano Wine moment and good luck!
Contest ends November 7!

DIY: Fall Starbucks-Inspired Body Scrubs

Happy fall, y'all! It is seriously my favorite season of the year. My birthday is in the fall! I love the weather, leaves, scarves, s'mores around a fire, pumpkins, and of course, those annual fall drinks from Starbucks. Are you a fan? Today I'm sharing some Fall Starbucks-Inspired Body Scrubs. These look good enough to drink, but instead are great exfoliators for your body. Enjoy.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Scrub
1 c sugar
1/2 c pumpkin puree (I used canned, but freshly pureed sugar/baking pumpkins works too)
1/4 c sweet almond oil
1 tsp nutmeg
Mix ingredients. Store in an air-tight container. Stir before using.

*For presentation purposes, I used whipped cream and dusted cinnamon and nutmeg on top.
.

Salted Caramel Mocha
1/2 c Kosher salt
1/2 c brown sugar
1 tsp powdered milk
1/4 c vitamin e oil
2 drops hazelnut toffee essential oil (optional)
2 drops caramel essential oil (optional)
Mix ingredients. Store in an air-tight container. Stir before using.
*For presentation purposes, I used whipped cream, drizzled caramel, and dusted sugar and sea salt on top.

Vanilla Cream Latte
1 tsp powdered milk
1 c sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla essential oil
1/2 c melted coconut oil
Mix ingredients. Store in an air-tight container. Stir before using.

*For presentation purposes, I used whipped cream and sprinkled vanilla bean seeds on top.

Notes:
  • While these are sugar and sugar-salt scrubs, feel free to substitute used coffee grounds for a bit more of an authentic smell.
  • These store for up to six months in an air-tight container. Contents will need to be stirred before using.
  • I recommend these scrubs for the body only.
  • Due to the slippery nature of the oils, use caution exiting the tub/shower.
  • Please substitute oils or other ingredients for others if allergic.
  • This post is not affiliated with Starbucks.
  • I'm doing this again with the winter drinks!

Giveaway! Sinless Cocktails

The Academy Awards are my Superbowl! I love it all: from the red carpet--dissecting the dresses, hair, and makeup; to the awards--I'm a huge movie buff; and of course, the excuse to have a party. For my Oscar party tonight, I'm serving Sinless Cocktails--non-alcoholic mixers that are All Natural, Sugar Free and have ONLY 5 Calories per serving! Just add alcohol of you'd like. I'm keeping it casual with Sinless cocktails (click here for Sinless recipes) and snacks served in champagne coupes.

This Margarita mixer is my favorite, but I like adding coconut tequila!

If you like mint, you'll love the refreshing Mojito mix. I added strawberry rum to mine.

I was sent the Margarita and Mojito mixers, but there are other flavors as well, like Strawberry Margarita and Sour. And don't worry if you don't drink alcohol--they are just as tasty. Today I'm giving away the Margarita and Mojito mixers to one lucky reader!

To enter below, leave a comment and tell me what you would like to see on the blog and make sure I have an email to contact you! For extra entries, do one or more of the following and leave a comment for each (not required):

Guest Post: Kendra Thornton's A Tropical Treat for Cold Winter Months

A Tropical Treat for Cold Winter Months

I remember the days when I was soaking up the sun at the Halekulani Hotel on the
Island of Oahu. Hawaii truly is an incredible paradise, and the staff treated me like
a queen. However, the sun and hospitality is not all I soaked up. I indulged in a Mai
Tai that was to die for. It was so delicious that I decided I had to recreate it for my
friends back in Chicago. I did not leave my vacation until I had a firm grasp on how
to recreate this delectable treat.

Halekulani Mai Tai Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

1/3-Ounce Orgeat Syrup

1/3 Ounce Orange CuraƧao

1/3-Ounce Rock Candy Syrup

3/4-Ounce Bacardi Gold Rum

1/2-Ounce Bacardi 151 Rum

1 1/4 Ounce Fresh Lime Juice

3/4 Ounce Bacardi Select (float)

METHOD:

- Build over crushed ice and float with 3/ 4 ounce of Bacardi Select Rum.

- Garnish with lime wheel, sugar cane stick, mint leaf, and Vanda orchid.

The Halekulani Hotel is located where the ocean meets the land on Waikiki
Beach. The beach is made of fine white sand, and is on the south shore of
Honolulu. It used to be a playground for Hawaiian royalty. Once you set foot
on it, you can see why. In the winter months, humpback whales breach off the
shore. Guests gather on the beach to watch the sun dip into the blue water of the
ocean each night.

The Halekulani, which is consistently ranked among the top hotels in Honolulu, gave
my husband and I gave us something to remember and be able to replicate from
our own home. If you can’t make it to Hawaii, sipping on this Mai Tai is the next best
thing. Get some friends together and be the hit of the party while serving this tasty
cocktail! Enjoy!

Beauty on the Go at Starbucks!

It's the WEEKEND! While I have lots planned, sometimes things happen, emergencies happen, and life happens. That's how this crazy idea came about--over 4 years ago, I was with my mom and sisters on a day trip to visit our brother, SIL, and newborn nephew in the hospital. My brother asked me to stay the night, with my family coming back the next day to pick me up. I had no car and was not prepared. I personally feel better when I look better, especially after hanging out for hours in the hospital. The next morning we went to Starbucks, and I immediately started looking around for beauty supplies. With just a little creativity, I was back to myself in no time and ready to be there for my family.

Some things have been added over the years, and some things are free and others aren't (some items may not be at all stores), but all of them work and have been personally used by me. Since there are Starbucks just about everywhere, many of us can benefit from these tips. If it makes you uncomfortable, ask before taking the freebies (I use such a small amount, and usually purchase something, so I don't feel badly). Also, since I have so much to cover, I'm breezing through these tips quickly, but will gladly clarify--let me know. You'll want to keep these tips in mind for emergencies or traveling--they work! Now let's go to Starbucks!

Napkins

  • Once inside you'll notice, other than the aroma of coffee, is the area where you dress your drink. There are so many goodies here! One of my favorite items here would be the napkins! These are perfect for removing excess oil from your face (I do this in the summer, when my nose is oily). Keep Starbucks napkins in your purse, bag, or car for quick touch ups--not just any napkin will do! Go try it!
  • The inside of the napkins are great for using the crease as a funnel for nail and craft projects--a must for keeping glitter or small beads at bay.
  • I've used the tiniest corner of napkin to repair a nail once.

Condiments

  • The sugar, water, lemons, milk, cream, honey, nutmeg and cocoa can all be used for beauty treatments for skin, face, and hair. For example, sugar and lemon make a great exfoliator for the face or hands. I've mentioned these and other natural Beauty DIYs here.
  • Cocoa powder is great for hiding roots, and if you're in dire straits, mix a little with plain chapstick on the inside of a cup lid for an instant creamy shadow. I've also used this as a makeshift bronzer, but this works better for lighter skin tones, as it has a greyish cast. Avoid if allergic, of course.
Food and Beverages
  • Take plain, uncooked oatmeal (avoid the toppings) and use as a mask or scrub for face/body and even as dry shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly brush out.
  • The yogurt makes a great mask for hair/face, just remove the fruit first.
  • Starbucks has fruit, too! Apples, strawberries, and bananas make excellent face/body/skin masks.
  • The Cake Pop stick is perfect for mixing, scraping (more on that below), using an an emergency hair stick (this only works on the top layer of my hair, but will work better on shorter, thinner hair), refreshing curled lashes, pushing back cuticles, and for crafting/nail art! Try using the stick for making dots on nails (like in this Evil Eye or this School Spirit Nail art).
  • Keep the cucumbers from the Bistro Box and use to depuff eyes--an old tip that works.
  • Hot herbal tea is wonderful for opening up the sinuses--use as a mini steam treatment.
  • Cooled teas can be used for shiny hair, hair enhancer, relief from sunburn, foot soak, or toner. Let me know in the comments if you'd like more details on which type of tea does what.
  • Espresso, once cooled, can enhance brown hair. Leave on at least half an hour before rinsing away.

Stirrer, Sleeve, Cup, Lid, Bag
  • Similar to the Cake Pop stick, the stirrer (I'm talking about the green plastic plug ones, but they have the wooden ones too) works for mixing, scraping, pushing back cuticles, cleaning under nails, and crafting/nail art.
  • The sleeve can be used as a guide for winged shadow or liner. Or as a mascara shield.
  • The cup is instant storage, mixing cup, and the bottom can be used to trace a circle for crafts. True story: I once used it as a contact case in desperation! Not recommended.
  • The lid fits perfectly in your hand as an artist's palette. One summer I traveled from New Zealand, Australia  and Hawaii--in the same trip! I used the lid and stirrer to transform my moisturizer and foundation from visiting NZ and Aus into a tinted moisturizer. It's also for scraping shadow and adding water/setting spray/contact solution to make a more intense shadow.
  • I've also used the stick/stirrer to scrape shadow onto the lid and then I added clear polish and mixed with the stick/stirrer. Instant nail polish!
  • The bag works well to catch fall out from shimmery shadows--a must for the holidays.
  • Tear bag into strips and dampen hair with water. Use the strips to wrap around your hair and then knot. Add heat or allow to dry naturally. Remove the strips and you'll have curls!

What are your tips for Beauty on the Go?
Have a great weekend. Be safe, behave, and be well. Love, Elle

DIY: Decorated Drinks for Valentine's Day

Since Valentine's Day is right around the corner, I thought I'd share a few sweet treats this week. First up, I'm showing ways to make ordinary drinks extra special. And don't let a lack of Valentine stop you! Modify these for kids or make them for yourself! Check out my Decorated Drinks:

Make that cappuccino cute with a heart on top for FREE!
  • Take a drink lid (free anywhere that sells sodas or these can be bought) and trace a heart.
  • Cut out the heart--remember there's a hole in the middle of the lid to make cutting easier.
  • Place stencil on top of drink (perfect fit!) and sprinkle cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.
  • Gently remove stencil.
How about Heart-shaped Marshmallows in hot cocoa?
  • To decorate hot chocolate, add a dollop of cream (I used Reddi-Whip) and a Peeps heart-shaped marshmallow.
Milk Hearts

  • What goes great with Valentine cookies (that I did not bake)? Heart-shaped milk cubes!
  • Pour milk into a heart-shaped mold (I got mine for $1 at Target, but lollipop molds work too).
  • Add a drop of food coloring and mix with a toothpick.
  • Once the milk hearts have frozen, drop them in a cool glass of milk.
  • OTHER IDEAS: no milk? Use water instead with food coloring or strawberry syrup. Or pour strawberry milk into molds for flavor. Or try Kool-Aid cubes in the milk. I've tried all and they're delish!
