Autumn Watercolor Nails: How To

how to autumn water color nails

It's still fall y'all (as evidenced by this post), and I thought I'd wrap up the unofficial ending of the season with a quick and effortless nail tutorial.

The best part? I bet you have everything you need already!

markers for nail art tutorial
First, paint nails white. This makes the colors pop. I suggest 1 light coat.

Next, grab some permanent markers--whatever colors you'd like. I was going for an autumnal vibe here, influenced by the leaves and the colors of season.

Third, you'll need a small container of rubbing alcohol.

Finally, a clear polish to seal the design.

nail art hacks sharpies
Once the white coat has dried, dip the tip of the Sharpie into the alcohol and then make your design (I did blobs and dots) onto the nail. Repeat with additional colors. Make sure all of the nail is filled in. Depending on the dryness of your marker (like if it's new or old), you might have to leave the marker in the alcohol for up to 5 seconds.

You can also dip a small brush into the alcohol and blur out your colors that way. If you get too much alcohol on your nail, just lightly blow it to dry. Sharpies are non-toxic, but I suggest sealing your work with a clear top coat.

And that's it! This would make a fun idea for a Thanksgiving accent nail, too.

What's on your nails?

Extra Elle:
  • Had a super quick weekend back in my hometown. My nephew turned 7 (I shared it on Insta and Snapchat--both Ellesees). I'll be back there for Thanksgiving this week.
  • My good weekend was almost ruined by a rude comment on a pic of mine. I had a response, even a blog post planned out. But decided in the end to let it roll off my back--she doesn't know me and responding to her wouldn't fix anything. I felt instantly better.

  12. Haaa! This is brilliant, Elle, it never ever crossed my mind to use a colour sharpies. And wow, why can't people just be nice to others instead of leaving rude remarks? What happened to if you have nothing good to say then don't say anything at all? Good on you for not letting it ruin your weekend. Hugs!

  24. Your nails are so cute!! I have never even thought about using a sharpie on them before but that is brilliant!!!

I hate that you had a rude comment on one of your photos. People are so ridiculous these days. Probably someone who is miserable and hates life. You are too sweet to let anything like that bring you down!

  25. Such pretty nails! This may be a silly question, but does the sharpie just come right off with regular nail polish remover? Since there's a white base underneath that it's attached to, I'm assuming so. But I thought I'd check. :)

Sorry about the rude comment. That stinks! Glad you were able to let it go, though!

Sorry about the rude comment. I get them too. Sometimes I do write a blog post about it if the person is a no-reply. If you're being a coward, I'll probably call you out. Some people just suck.
