Beauty Quick Tip: Get Thicker, Fuller Lashes

Hey you! I hope you had a great weekend. But first, I wanted to thank you for your feedback on Friday's post. I appreciate your advice so much. Today's Quick Tip is how to get thicker, fuller lashes. No fancy lash growth serums or false lashes required! Just an easy technique I bet you're already doing.

before/after

Here's what you'll need:

1--If you're wearing shadow, do that step first. I skipped it here. Next, curl your lashes and apply a volumizing mascara. This is the first trick to making lashes look thicker. I like L'Oreal Voluminous or Dior Show. See the mascara wand (aka spooley) in the pic above? This type of traditional brush gives volume. Wiggle it at the base of the lashes before moving it up.

2--Choose the liner for your upper lash line. Despite the name, the purpose of eye liner isn't to line eyes, it's to make lashes look thicker. Choose from pencil (pictured from last month's IPSY bag), gel (in the collage above), liquid (usually has a felt tip, like you'd use for winged liner), or powder. The trick here is to make sure there is NO skin gap between your liner and the lash line. You wouldn't believe what a common mistake this is!

3--If you're using powder, pencil, or gel, use a clean brow brush (pictured in collage, all price ranges) to really work that product into the lash line to help prevent gaps and get thicker-looking lashes. Wiggle it back and forth to work it in.

4--Here's the biggest trick to get thicker lashes--line the waterline. Not lining this area allows the skin under the lash line to show through and disrupts the illusion of fuller lashes. I admit, using a pencil always makes my eyes water, but when I use a brow brush with product instead, it works. Just gently lift up the upper lashes and press product onto the waterline. Yes, this is safe for contact lens wearers and it doesn't hurt. If the brow brush is too big for you, try a traditional liner brush--it will say it's a liner brush on the packaging. It's smaller and pointed, so it will take longer, but it works just as well.

And that's it! From here you can smudge a shadow underneath the lower lash line (I skipped it here). It looks less harsh than a liner underneath the bottom lash line. If you get transfer of liner from the upper waterline to to lower, you can leave it or you can gently remove. Remember to make sure there are no gaps around your lash line and you're set!

What's your favorite liner? Mascara?

  6. These are great tips! I am such a low maintenance makeup person, I never want to mess with liner! haha. I have been wanting to get a new one though! I use all organic or natural makeup products. I'm constantly trying to make sure that I am using cleaner versions of everything. I like 100 Percent Pure for most products. Though Jessica Alba just launched her Honest Beauty line, and I can't wait to try hers. :) Thanks for the tips! XO -Alexandra

  10. Gorgeous results, Elle - your eyes look amazing! My favorite mascara is a toss up between Too Faced Better Than Sex and Benefit's Roller Lash. As for liner, I'm all about liquid - my go-to is a L'Oreal one {can't think of the name at the moment}!

  11. This was great!! I didnt know most of that. I had to take a picture of my eye in the middle of reading it so I could examine if I had a skin gap between the liner and my lashes, and I didnt! Sorry you were sick this weekend but I'm glad you are feeling better now!

  14. I use Almay liquid liner on my top lids to make my lashes look thicker because the older I get, the thinner they are getting. I need that pop of dark above my lids to give some depth.

    Still sending you well wishes.

  15. Sofa City sounds good for relaxing, but I hope you recover soon, a cold is never good. My week had bad news about my eyes/sight, but on treatment now :) I liked the tips, actually I use makeup that way, but unfortunately I have to wear some eye drops that make lashes full - it's medicinal use, but at least something good came out of it :) During the week, by the way, I mentioned you and a lip balm tip you gave :)

  23. Great post, lady! I just realized what a difference lining my upper waterline does for making my lashes look thicker - I'm not that great at applying eyeliner to begin with, so lining the waterline really makes it foolproof for me.

  33. I recently bought Kat Von D liquid liner after reading so many amazing reviews and I hate to admit that it totally worth the money. I've always been a drugstore girl but dang, that eye liner worth every single penny!

  34. I'm a pretty lazy makeup person but I do always use eyeliner and mascara. Never thought about it making my lashes look thicker. I just do it because it feels incomplete without the two. Not sure I could do the upper waterline, though. I'm weird about putting things in my eye (I don't do the bottom waterline, either).

  35. I actually never line my waterline! You have convinced me I need to give it a try! Even though I feel like I'll poke myself in the eye :|
