2 Reasons Why You Need A Brown Lipstick (Plus My Faves)

I know what you're thinking: brown lipstick? No thanks.

I hear ya--90s flashbacks of dark brown lipstick with very thin eyebrows (choker optional):

Luckily, brown lipsticks have been given a fresh update with leanings more toward mauve or nude.

And you need one.

It's just a matter of finding one that appeals to you.

Need more convincing? Ever bought a lipstick and hated it? A brown lipstick can fix it!
1-Pink lipstick looks gorgeous in the tube, but it's just too pink/fuchsia/fluorescent/bright on you. Add a brown lipstick to tone it down.

2-You want those nude lips but the shade you picked out looks like you rubbed concealer on your lips and sorry Zombie-lips, Halloween is over. What to do? Add a brown lipstick for the perfect nude lip.

Convinced yet? Check out my suggestions:

Pictured: Milani Teddy Bare (darker skin tones will love), Ciate Olivia Palmermo Praline (looks very natural), Milani Matte Nude (great nude and I also suggest Maybelline Nude Nuance)

More options? Well, ok! Rimmel Paradise (slight frost but great to mix with other lipsticks), Gerard Cosmetics 1995 (the name says it all), MAC Twig (Kylie Jenner made this popular), Bare Minerals Moxie Fall in Love (so moisturizing)

They all look the same, right? Let's change that with some swatches:

And now some lip swatches that I swear look similar here but are different in person (I had to use artificial lighting, thanks time change):

See? Slightly brown, slightly mauve, slightly nude and definitely worth trying out!

Try also: brown lip creams from NYX and brown lip crayons from Neutrogena

Do you own any brown lipsticks?
Would you try a brown lipstick?

Extra Elle:
  • Life has been crazy, so I almost missed the Sephora VIB Rouge sale. Luckily, Instagram reminded me. I got so many great suggestions and will be sharing my haul Monday! Long story short, I made FIVE orders. Five. Early Christmas present?
  • I'm blessed to have military on both sides of my family, men and women. One of my brothers is currently serving and he looks so much like my dad did when he was serving. My Grandfathers were heavily decorated during their army careers, and I always think of them especially on this day. My paternal Grandfather actually passed away on Veterans Day in 1989--I couldn't think of a more fitting day. I am forever indebted to the many veterans and their service.

  10. As always, this is a helpful post. When I started playing with lipstick, I had no clue what colors to wear. I avoided brown for the longest time until I actually tried it and realized it looks better than what I expected.

  20. I like the ones that tend more toward nude-brown. I'm not sure I could go do a darker one. Though honestly I rarely wear lipstick (like maybe a couple of times a year - usually in the winter when my skin is pale and I rock red lips). If I wore it more then I'd definitely at least try one of the browns!

  21. Wow, love this, I definitely think a nude/brown lip colour is a good idea. The praline and paradise colours look so lovely on you. <3/M

  24. Hahahahaha choker optional. LOVE IT! I never thought about brown fixing other colors. That is brilliant!!! I meant to grab the Milani Nude last time I was at Walgreens. Need to pick it up! I have seen both you and Kristen gush about it :)

  25. Elle, I think about 90% of lipsticks I wear are brown! I think it's because of my skin tone, and the fact that I grew up in the 90's....hehe. I don't think I saw Teddy Bare when I bought my Milani lipsticks but will look for that next time.

  26. You know I love the brown toned lipsticks! I love Milani matte nude and Mac twig. I'll have to check out the other Milani color your mentioned. Mac hug me is another one of my favorites. I'm excited to see your haul from the sephora sale!

  27. I need to get one of these! The Twig shade looks really nice. Many thanks to all of your relatives for their military service!

  28. I recently hopped on the brown lips train. I've been enjoying ColourPop's Beeper liquid, matte lip stick. It's never something I would have picked up and I think that's why I like it so much. (: I think Praline is my favorite out of this bunch!

  29. Lots of great options! And I like your suggestions on how they tone down a pink or darken a nude. A good color to have on hand!

  30. I usually go with browns and purples since my lips are darker.

  31. Great! I think Heather Shimmer by Rimmel is a good one too, it does have a shimmer to it and it isn't matte but it's gorgeous and kind of brown!

  42. Oh when I was in college I use to wear a brownish/burgundy lipstick that I loved. I saw a beauty story in Allure and the model was pale with pale no makeup eyes and dark lips in this color and I loved it and use to do my makeup like this all the time. The color was kind of like Fall in Love but with more burgundy.

  43. I've always stayed away from brown lipsticks but MAC Twig looks like it would be a beautiful color. I think brown lipstick would be awesome for fall, and I like the natural look that it has.

  44. I love the idea of a brown lipstick... if only I could find the right color! I used to wear an intense brown when I was in middle school actually. It was dark brown with a bit of burgundy. I've long forgotten the brand and color, though. I started wear lip gloss and forgot all about lipstick until a few years ago.

  45. I don't own any brown lipsticks, but you have me convinced. I need to keep track of the next good CVS sale and get something to blend with some of my nudes.

  49. You certainly have a talent for picking the shades that look good on you! :) I'm not really a big lipstick wearer but I admire those that have large collections to mix and match, and like you've done here, to layer on top of each other! :)
