How To: Zooey Deschanel Makeup, Hair, Outfit

I don't think a month goes by that I don't get a request for a tutorial on Zooey Deschanel's hair and makeup. And the last time I did a tutorial on her was two or three years ago (featuring some horrible camera phone pics in a dark bathroom...my, how I've upgraded), so I thought it was time for an update. Plus, Halloween is next week and this would make an easy last-minute costume idea. Let's get started:

For the makeup, you'll need--
  • full-coverage foundation and concealer (if needed. I have freckles and chose to blur them a bit to closer match her complexion)
  • liquid eye liner
  • black liner or shadow with smudge brush
  • mascara
  • eye lash curler
  • false lashes (optional)
  • blush
  • lipstick
-The biggest key to this look is the eyeliner. Use a liquid liner on the top lash line.
-Smudge a black shadow or liner on the bottom lash line.
-Curl lashes and apply mascara. I suggest Lancome Hypnose or L'Oreal Manga mascaras to give more of an effect closer to Zooey's. To further enhance the look, I applied false lashes.

-This is completely optional, but Zooey has round eyes and I don't. To closer mimic her eye shape, I applied a taupe matte shadow in my crease, focusing the bulk of the shadow in the middle of my crease. I made sure the liquid liner was the thickest in the middle and didn't really flick it out. I also placed a white or skin tone liner in my waterline to help my eyes look rounder.

-Finish the makeup with blush along the tops of cheekbones and apply lipstick. Zooey wears pink and red lips often. The best thing about this makeup is that it is probably what many of you do already, with just a heavier concentration of eyeliner.
-Since this look is just inspired by her, I chose not to contour my face to closer resemble hers. I wanted something wearable.

For Zooey's hair you'll need--
  • wig or hair extensions (if needed)
  • fake bangs (if needed)
  • teasing brush
  • hairspray and heat protectant
  • curling wand

-After applying heat protectant and letting it dry, make sure hair is brushed and divided in half.
-Starting at the back of hair, take a 1 inch section, place the wand in front of the section and wrap hair around it. Hold 10 seconds.
-Take another section, place the wand behind the section, and wrap around it. Hold 5-10 seconds. Repeat these steps for the rest of hair. Spray and allow to cool.
-I applied some fake bangs--these are side swoop ones. While Zooey's bangs are generally straight across, that look just didn't work for me, so that's why I chose the swoop bangs.
-I teased the crown for a little height.

Need more instructions? Don't worry--I have a video tutorial below I made for you:

Red and Black Stripes: Holidays

-For her outfit, a striped shirt, black tights, black flats, and red skirt are easy and affordable. On New Girl, Zooey's character often wears glasses, so I threw those in as well.

So I grabbed a few pics of Zooey to use as my inspiration board for makeup, hair, and outfit (and apparently my poses as you'll see below).

Have a great weekend! Be safe, behave, and be well. Love, Elle

  10. Oh my gosh look at you!! So pretty!! So one question - to make your eyes look bigger, you place a taupe shadow in the crease? With the bulk of the shadow in the center of the crease? Just clarifying! I have droopy eyelids(: Susan

  32. Wait... there's such a thing as fake bangs?! I had no idea! But then I only learned about hair extensions a couple of years ago so I guess I'm just kind of out of that loop anyway, haha! Now I kind of want to try the fake bangs to see if I'd like them. I always want side swept bangs, but I also know that bangs can be disastrous with my hair type so I haven't done it yet. Maybe someday!

  41. Elle, I loved this tutorial! You did such a great job of making your almond eyes look round and so much like hers! Great hair curling pointers, too. I might have to try this eye look! I'd love to know what it would be like to have big round eyes instead of the almond slivers I was issued at birth, lol! <3
