This or That: NYX Butter Lipstick vs Essence Lipstick

Each week in January, I'm comparing two similar beauty products.
I call it This or That
Enjoy & let me know what you'd like to see compared!

This week's edition should be called This, That, That, or That. While I'm comparing two similar lipsticks, NYX Butter Lipstick and Essense Look At Me Lipstick, I'll be throwing in some additional similar lipsticks. Check 'em out:

NYX Butter Lipstick is a newer product that I had to try. I really liked this wearable mauve (it's more of a wearable nude on me) shade in Pops.
  • "The unique texture seems to melt onto the lips, giving full, yet lightweight coverage with a luxurious satin finish"--via website.
  • $6
  • 27 shades
  • Not a fan of packaging, but it does make it easy to tell the shade.
  • Not sticky
  • Nice pigmentation
  • Not "buttery" at all

I had to compare the NYX with a similar lipstick in my collection, Essence Lipstick in Glamour Queen.
  • "Essence Lipstick has a smooth texture and extra glossy shine. The modern and personalized color-matched packaging makes finding your favorite shade as easy as 1-2-3!"--via website
  • $2.99
  • 7 shades
  • Not a fan of packaging, but it does make it easy to tell the shade.
  • Nice pigmentation
  • Not sticky
  • Very moisturizing
Overall:
  • Both had similar packaging and were similar in shade, but that's where the similarities ended.
  • I was surprised the find that Essence was much more moisturizing and shiny, even though it was not advertised as having a "butter" consistency. And it's half the price!
  • I compared the NYX to Revlon Lipbutters and Maybelline Color Whispers, since the latter two are very similar. The NYX Butter Lipstick was no where near as creamy and moisturizing as those. Essence is not a dupe for those, but it is very moisturizing.
  • If you're looking for a "butter" lipstick, skip NYX. Try Revlon, Maybelline, Essence, or NYX Butter Balms or Glosses instead.

  5. I enjoy the NYX butter gloss so I'm sad to see the lipstick is subpar. I have the matte one and it's awful. I need to try more Essence. I have picked up very few of their products.

  6. Have never tried NYX lipsticks, but am a big Essence fan, and the lipsticks are indeed very moisturizing.

  7. I love the color. Bummer about the non-butter consistency.

  8. I think the best "butter-like" lipsticks are definitely the Revlon Lip Butters. I haven't had anything like it. Great post!

  9. They both seem really similar, I think Id prefer the NYX version though.

  10. I'm yet to find a NYX lipstick that I like very much. I am wary of both NYX and Essence, though, as the only place I can get them is Ulta and the ones I have found always look like someone opened them, tried them and put them back.

  23. Oh my god both are so so cute! I dig nude colors like these but unfortunately they make me look too washed out because of my Indian skin tone. I wish you and your loved ones a very happy new year

  25. Oh I saw the NYX butter the other day at Ulta and I was thinking of trying it because I really like the Revlon lip butters but I guess maybe I should try the maybelline one instead because of your review compares it more with the Revlon ones. Thanks Elle! :)

  27. Anything with "butter" in it instantly gets compared to Revlon's lip butters and there just IS no comparing to Revlon's lip butters in my eyes!

  32. these are really pretty colors! i'm obsessed with (of all things) the avon chapstick/gloss that i posted about a couple days ago!

  33. I cannot even fathom that Essence can win in any beauty battle. I have the NYX Butter Lipstick in Big Cherry and it is very moisturizing, very true to the butter smooth claims. I will purchase the Pops hue as well so I can see for myself how much can it differ from Big Cherry in texture. I am not a fan of Essence and I only pick up random nail art tools from them. Cheap and it shows.
