Elle's Quick Tips: Cheap Makeup Primer

Elle's Quick Tips: Makeup Primer

There was a lady of a certain age I used to work with that had flawless makeup. I would always ask her for the secret and she'd constantly tease me. One day, she finally fessed up--she used Monistat Chafing Gel as a makeup primer! I know what you're thinking...Monistat? But this product that's used to chafing of the skin really works. I thought she was pulling my leg, but I consulted my research team (ok, I just Googled) and found mostly positive results. For $5, I figured it was worth a shot. I like the consistency and have used it with great results. Yes, it's found in the Women's Care section, but don't let the brand name deter you! My only warning is if you have acne-prone skin (it has silicone). I've never had problems, however. And it's around $5! That's not a bad deal, compared to say, Smashbox Primer.
Have you tried this? What were your results? Would you try it?

PS--I'm guest posting at the lovely Maddy Chronicles today. It was a very special and personal post for me. Go check it out!

i remember at orientation for my job my supervisor said things like that and preparation H are some of the items with the highest shoplifting rates because people don't want to be seen buying them haha.

  6. Wow! Heard of a lot of secret "makeup" tricks, but never this one! I don't really use primer (not sure how it fits into my makeup routine since I don't use a foundation), but it sounds like a great alternative to the real stuff! And thank you for guest posting on my blog! I really enjoyed your post, really great advice in there! I hope everyone gets to read it because nowadays, you never know :o/

  7. Beautiful post on Maddy's blog today, Elle. I too believe that sometimes things DO happen for a reason...even things we think are "bad" things. Silver linings do exist!

As a Smashbox primer user....I have to say, I did flinch a little when I heard the name Monistat and thought of my face....however, on your recomendation....I'm hitting CVS today to pick up a bit.

Happy Wednesday....so nice to meet you!

  8. I really enjoyed your post on Maddy's blog!

This is totally crazy, but that flawless skin remark makes me tempted to try it. Although I would kind of feel like I needed to hide it in my drawer or something lol :-)

  9. I seriously would never have even thought to try this! I usually go for the Avon primer (about $7 a tube and good quality I've found).

  11. That's kind of hilarious. Must remember this. I knew a woman who used prep' H for her puffy eyes :)

  12. I some times question the benefits of a face primer. If you use a good cleanser and a moisturizer, what's the point is how I feel. I don't think I'll be using monistat on my face. I have very sensitive skin!

  13. Back in my old pageant days, we used to use Prep. H for all sorts of things. I've heard that they have since changed the formula, so it doesn't work the same anymore.
I may have to give this a try.

  14. What the heck?! Do you rub it all over like a base? I'm bad with makeup.

  15. Well, that's certainly a new one to me! I wonder if it would irritate sensitive skin?

  20. I've used the Monistat Anti-Chafe cream as a mattifies, as I have really oily skin. I've never tried it as a primer... I will give it a go!
