Switch This Product In Your Morning Routine

Let's talk about morning routines for a minute. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning? Do you have it down to a science or are your grabbing stuff in a dash? I have find myself going towards the latter lately, because I've been extra busy lately. I am trying to streamline my morning routine to make it efficient as possible. And that means switching to products that work, especially when it comes to essentials.

Introduced by Simply Stylist, I’ve partnered with Dove to let you know about Dove Dry Spray. Have you had a chance to try this yet? This deodorant has become a trending product of 2015, and for good reason. Y'all know me--if it's new, and if it's popular, I've gotta try it!

First, it has an instant dry application--no need to wait for it to dry. I love that because it gives a cleaner feel. If you're a woman on-the-go (aren't we all?) you'll enjoy this option.

Dove Dry Spray provides 48 hours of odor and wetness protection with all the care of Dove for softer, smoother underarms.

What's In My NANNY Bag?

If I'm not behind a camera or computer for the blog, you can find me at my day job: nanny. I've been blessed to have recently celebrated 5 years taking care of two little girls who keep me on my toes. I try my hardest to create a loving, fun learning environment with lots of play. And we have the best adventures. Today I'm sharing a peek into my nanny bag:

Minus my keys, wallet, and wadded tissues, this is my bag at the end of the day:
  • Bright, fun bag made of wipeable material (has even served as a seat for wet grass)
  • Light up bubble gun--bubbles and twinkly lights cure all. This is my secret trick that always works (even on grumpy adults).
  • Magic Rock--The 5 year old painted this rock for me and told me it was magic. I asked what made it magical, and she said, "That will be $5." ;)

  • Rimmel Keep Calm and Lip Balm--Yes, I wear makeup (almost) daily at work but prefer a lip balm with a hint of tint--this one is in Play. Very appropriate for my day job, eh? I love these and have them all. Keep Calm and Lip Balm has just the right amount of moisturizing for lips and it's only $2.50 at Walmart. The 5 yr old likes to apply it on me when we play "beauty salon." It's a "just bitten" tint of berry blush--super wearable.
  • Cheap sunglasses so I don't get upset if they get stepped on or broken
  • Notebook and pen--You never know when a good idea will strike or you need to keep the kids busy drawing for a minute
  • Coffee cup that I refilled with water--but this is usually a water bottle
  • Phone--I think I'm the only girl without an Iphone!
  • Sunscreen
  • Hand sanitizer spray
  • Mints--I've even used these as a musical instrument for impromptu dance parties or jam session. Babies love these to shake.
  • 3 hair clips--one for the 17 month old, one for the 5 yr old, and one for me :)

Best Drugstore Frizz Fighters

how to get rid of frizz

Hi, I'm Elle. And let me introduce you to my hair. The bottom layer is super straight and fine. The top layer is naturally wavy and holds curl for days. And then, there are the sides. They are dry, coarse, and very, very frizzy. My hair has always grown in like this. And my goal is to make all of it look cohesive, and that means using something for frizz.

I scoured the drugstores for products designed to fight frizz. After months and months of testing, I can't wait to share my results. I tested these in winter, spring, and summer. I tested these on windy days, rainy days, humid days, super hot days, and even at the beach. I tested these in steamy showers. I tested these with certain kids who love to torment play with my hair. I'm tested out!

frizz hair products reviews
I tested a variety of frizz-fighting products like creams, serums, and oils. To make my hair straight and frizz-free, I prefer doing a blow out with a round brush, and I used that hairstyle when testing these frizz--fighters. Tutorial for easy blow out at home is here.

cream to fight frizz
L'Oreal Smooth Intense X Treme Straight Creme
  • Note: When I began testing these in November of 2014, this was still available. It has been reformulated as Smooth Intense Ultimate Straight Perfecting Balm. I did test that and had the same results despite only using it a few times.
  • $5.97
  • B+
    • This worked decently at frizz (worked well at straightening my hair) but the 5 year old disliked the scent. ;)

John Frieda Frizz Ease Beyond Smooth Frizz-Immunity Primer
  • Non silicone formula with pure coconut oil and frizz immunity comples that improves hair with each use
  • $10.49

    • I am a huge John Frieda fan, and after seeing such positive reviews, I had to get this. It was awful on me and made my hair on the sides even frizzier. It was the most expensive of those tested and I really disliked it.

Tresemme Keratin Infusing Smoothing Serum

    • My hair usually dislikes serums and prefers creams, so I was shocked that I loved this one the most. It gave me shiny and smooth hair. It lasted the best through all of my testing. And it was the least expensive!

    • This smells amazing and gave me the shiniest hair. It worked well on frizz but it was borderline oily hair for me. In the pic below it looks amazing, but trust me my hair was really oily there. It did not work at straightening/smoothing my hair. It stayed wavy.

My two best frizz tips:

  • If a product has alcohol listed in the first 5 ingredients, skip it. I've found that alcohol dries out and frizzes my hair faster than anything.
  • I say this all the time, but I swear by a satin pillowcase. No friction. Here's a picture of how my hair looks when I wake up. Ignore the lack of makeup, hehe. And you should follow me on Insta already!

6 Beauty Tools You SHOULD Be Cleaning

It doesn't matter whether you have a couple of beauty products or are slightly obsessed with them: (that'd be me--hi, I'm Elle!) you have beauty tools you need to clean. I'm sharing some reminders for those beauty tools you SHOULD be cleaning. It's all painless, I swear!

Lip Liner 101

So this is the year you finally will learn about makeup, or maybe get those questions answered about the basics of it? Well, you've come to the right place. Every week I'm going back to the basics to give you makeup info. Today, I'm starting with something easy: lip liner.

Every time I feature lip liner in a tutorial, I get asked so many questions about it. It seems intimidating, but it's not. Listen up: it's time for lip liner 101:

Why Do I Need Lip Liner?

  • it defines lips
  • it changes/corrects the appearance of lip shapes, such as:
    • bigger
    • smaller
  • it provides an outline for lipstick application, like with red lipstick
    • prevents color from "bleeding" or "feathering" into fine line
  • it allows lipstick to stay on longer

Types: Lip liner generally comes in two forms:

  • pencil needs to be sharpened (some come with a sharpener in the cap or you can purchase a sharpener separately)
  • twist up (retractable)
  • It comes in a variety of shades, from clear (I suggest this for everyone) to various colors.
  • Lip liners can be found at the drugstore as well as high end.
4 Easy Ways to Wear Lip Liner:

Option 1: Take clear (also called invisible) liner and outline lips--if I am doing someone's lipstick who has fine wrinkles around the mouth, I'll outline slightly outside of the lip line too. Apply lipstick.

Option 2: Pick a shade of liner you'd like to wear. Outline and fill in lips. Leave as is for a very matte lip (most liners will be matte) or add a lip balm or clear gloss for a natural, stained lip look.

Option 3: Pick a shade that matches your lipstick. I suggest outlining your lips and filling them in. Sometimes beginners feel they look silly with outlined lips, so I suggest filling them in. It will make your lipstick last longer! Add lipstick or lip gloss that matches the liner.

Option 4: (bigger lips). Use a lip liner close to your lip color (a nude shade). Outline slightly above your natural lip line. Fill in and add a matching lip liner. I did my upper lip in this example.

These are just a few of the ways to use lip liner. I hope you try them out!

My Fave Nude Lip Combo--All Drugstore

Well, y'all we have reached another Monday. I mean, how fast was the weekend? Already I feel like I'm playing catch up in the new year. And this chilly weather has gotten me wishing for brighter temps and colors. While I am still about my dark lips this time of year, I find myself wearing nude lips a lot lately. I usually associate nude lips with summer, with smokey eyes and tanned skin.

But today I'm sharing my current fave combo for wearing nude lips--nude lips aren't always easy to wear. I generally look like a zombie when I wear them, but this interpretation incorporates a a twist on the 90s lip revival. The best part? Everything can be found at your local drugstore.

If you can't wear nude lips because they look washed out on you, try this combo. It works.

You can do all three steps or just the ones that work for you. And of course I give extra options because I always do. People pleaser in recovery, y'all.

The first thing you'll want to do is outline and fill in your lips with NYX lip liner in Nude Truffle. This is a nude beige, and since my lips aren't pigmented in a pretty color (they look kind of taupe...um, not cute) adding this first really helps. If this is too brown for you, try other shades like Pale Pink or Peekaboo Natural. Options: leave as is for a beige matte lip, ala 90s. You can also slightly outline outside your lip, as demonstrated above, ala Kylie Jenner. She doesn't show a cupid's bow on hers, fyi.
Cheaper: Jordana
A Little More: Prestige (Ulta and some Walgreens...really love this brand)

To add that color back, it's time to apply lipstick. I'm using Milani Nude Creme. It is such a gorgeous nude lipstick. If your lips are already too pink and you'd like more brown, try Milani Teddy Bare. For more options, I really like lipsticks from Maybelline, Revlon, Covergirl, and Rimmel.

Since nude lip looks are generally very glossy, I added one of my favorite nude lip glosses: NYX Butter Gloss in Creme Brûlée. They've got lots of shades that would work if you aren't a fan of this one. Tiramisu is a bit more brown, Eclair a bit more pink. There are new Lava lip glosses from Covergirl I'm a fan of (haul soon) that would work.

I love how natural and fresh this nude lip combo looks!

I'd love to learn your faves in the comments, below.

5 Ways to Apply False Lashes

For this week's How To Tuesday (er, Friday), I'm talking about false lashes. Applying false lashes can be one of the most intimidating beauty things, right? But it doesn't have to be! Today I'm sharing 5 different techniques to try.

Before you begin, you'll need the right tools. Let's start with lashes--these can be as cheap as $1 from ELF and up, way up. I personally like Ardell (love the Demi Wispies) and Salon Perfect (these can be found in drugstores and "box" stores) as they work well and aren't too expensive.

Lash glue is the second most important tool to have. Many people love Duo glue, but it smells like fish and irritates my eyes. I like Revlon's lash glue as it is latex-free. If you aren't sure if you're allergic to latex, try a small test patch. Choose clear or black lash glue. Dark looks a bit more natural, but it isn't required.

The biggest tip I have for you is to practice. Hold the eyelash in your fingers and bend it, to get a feel for it. Usually thinner bands work better, but a thick band is good to practice on. Until you get the hang of applying lashes, try using a lash tweeze tool, like the one from KISS above. Some people use actual tweezers to apply lashes. You'll definitely need tweezers if you're using individual lashes.

Other tools to have: lash curler--blends false lashes with your actual lashes, eyeliner--helps hide the band of the falsies, scissors--to trim lashes (see below)

Now that you've gotten your tools and lashes ready, let's inspect them a bit further. See how they are tapered? Take a false lash and place the shortest end of the falsie near the inner corner of your eye. Now hold the other end of the lash at the outer corner of your lash line. Are the lashes too long? If that is the case, try trimming them, but on the largest end only.

Apply a thin line of glue to the lash band and allow to get tacky for about 30 seconds-1 minute. Now, there are 5 different techniques to try to apply them:

METHOD 1: Sometimes it's easiest to work with lashes if they are smaller, so using scissors, cut them in half (or even thirds) before applying glue. I learned this tip from RuPaul! Just be sure to keep the strips in order by size. This is the first tip I recommend to readers when they ask me how to apply lashes. It works.

METHOD 2: Using a tool (like the one pictured above) or your fingers, place the smallest end of the fake lash in the inner corner of your lash line. Keep pushing it in the lash line until you reach the end.

METHOD 3: Use the same technique as above, except this time, place it in the center, press it down and then press down the ends into the lash line. This is the technique demonstrated above.

METHOD 4: Same as above, but apply it from the outer edge to the inner. The opposite of Method 2.

METHOD 5: This is the last resort method but it works. Be sure your skin isn't allergic to lash glue and that you don't have sensitive eyes. If you passed those tests, then apply the lash glue to your lash line. Allow 30 seconds to get tacky to the touch, and then apply your lashes (no glue on them) using method 2, 3, or 4. I admit, I tend to lean towards this method because it is the fastest for me. Try keeping the glue out of your actual lashes, as it is a hassle to clean.

Bonus Method: To fill out lashes or as a more natural-looking approach, try individual lashes. Place a dollop of glue on a clean surface, and using tweezers, dip the lash (3 are pictured above and they look much larger than they are) into the glue. Place it on a clean surface for a few seconds to get tacky. Repeat for the rest of lashes. I suggest using only 2 or 3 and placing these in the outer corner for fullness. Use your tweezers to place lashes along the lash line. Four or five lashes starts to look unbalanced, so either do two or three, or make sure to add them to the entire lash line.

FOR ALL METHODS: Allow the lashes to set/dry for a minute. Then, use a lash curler to gently bind the natural with the false lashes, otherwise you'll have a noticeable gap. Add eyeliner along the lash line. Some like to use mascara to help blend the natural with fake, but it isn't necessary.

Did you know you can reuse those lashes a few more times? Yes! This is especially important if you're using expensive lashes or those made from actual hair (like mink lashes). Simply use some eye makeup remover and a Q-Tip to remove the lash adhesive from the lash.

Now they are ready to be reused, so it's time to store them. I like using a days of the week pill case to easily store them--great for travel too.

TIPS:

  • Add the most glue to the ends, as those are usually the hardest to keep in place.
  • Make sure to press down the entire lash--beginning, middle, and end.
  • Remember to apply to the lash line, as close as you can get, but not on the actual lashes.
  • If using individuals, keep track of how many you added, so that you can be sure you removed them all. Just speaking from personal experience here!
  • Do a patch test of the adhesive to see how your skin reacts.

Blow Out Brushes 101

Earlier this week I posted a tutorial (check it out here) on how to do a beginner blow out at home. And one of the keys to doing a blow out is to have the right tools, which I briefly touched on in the video. Today, I'm sharing more details on which brush will work best for your blow out.

Brush Type
Vent--This is the standard brush that many of us have. It will blow dry your hair fast, thanks to the vents.

Straightening Brush--I originally shared a tutorial on using this here, but if you are looking for a sleek, straight look (and want to skip the flat iron), try this. I found mine at Sally Beauty.

Round--I consider this to be THE essential to a good blow out. You'll get volume, smoothing, and the bouncy curls. The size of the barrel depends on the amount of hair you are working with. I use a larger one since I have longer hair. I also suggest a round brush has some sort of venting. See examples below:

Round Barrel Material Type
Ceramic--Once round brushes moved from plastic or wood, the barrels became ceramic. Ceramic barrels help distribute heat evenly and cause negative ions (this helps with frizz). Most brushes will have ceramic mixed with other materials. All hair types can use this type.

Tourmaline--Think of this as a step up from ceramic. Tourmaline barrels help with frizz, static, and give a silkier look to hair than ceramic. All hair types can use this type.

Titanium--This is my personal favorite, as I've found these brushes to feel the lightest and give the best results. I feel like my hair dries faster and is shinier. Best for coarse, thick, or damaged hair, but can sometimes be the most expensive.

Bristles
Boar--Thick, coarse, and medium hair will love this type of bristle as it helps to distribute oils in hair for the smoothest blow out.

Nylon--Medium and fine hair will love this type and it is less expensive than boar brushes. I personally use a combo of boar and nylon.

Plastic--Fine for all hair types, but not the best for styling or a blow out, more like a quick dry.

Recap:
  • Now that you know about the different types of brushes, you can choose the right one for the effect you are looking for. If you are going for a traditional blow out (think volume and curls) I suggest a round brush.
  • Next, determine the size of the barrel, the type of barrel, and the bristles. I suggest a round brush with vents. Read the labels to make sure you know what type of barrel you are getting.
  • While in the store, hold the brush in your hand to get a good feel for the handle. Is it too heavy? Does it feel comfortable?
  • Prices range from drugstore to professional prices, making finding a good brush an affordable process. I've seen great ones around $10-$20. While there are decent brushes at the drugstore/box stores, try Sally Beauty, Ulta, or Sephora.

How To: Easiest Fishtail Braid Tutorial (Video)

Hey you! How was your weekend and your first day of summer? It was a rainy weekend, but the sun decided to come out Sunday, so I finally got a dip in the pool. One of my favorite summer hairstyles (for the pool, beach, or anytime) is the fishtail braid.

But no matter what tutorial I tried, I just couldn't figure the braid out. Instead, I tried a trick using the same method of when I taught myself how to braid as a little girl: I visualized the braid unraveling and then how to put it together. I came up with this method and everyone who has tried it can now fishtail braid. And now so can you. Here's how to:

Need:
  • large mirror (if doing this on yourself)
  • brush or comb
  • hair elastic
Do:

-Brush or comb hair to remove tangles. This will make it easier to braid.
-Do a side part.
-Now, take your hair to the opposite side of where you just parted it. TIP: I like braiding my hair in front since it's easier when you can see what you're doing! Even if you wouldn't wear it on the side, try it this way for practicing the braid until you get the hang of it.

-Divide your hair in half. The two sections should be equal so your braid will be even. I call them the right section and the left section.
-I consider each section to have an outside and an inside. The outside points toward the wall. The inside points toward hair (see pic above).

-Take a piece from the outside of a section of hair. You can start with either the left or right section.
-Make sure the pieces you choose remain the same in size so the braid will be consistent and even.

-Take that piece from the outside of your section and cross it over to the inside of the opposite section.  For example, take a piece from the outside of the right section, and cross it over to the inside of the left section.

-Now, you'll repeat the same steps but with the other section of hair.
-Take a piece of hair (it should be the same size as the first piece) from the outside.

-And cross it over to the inside of the opposite section.
-Now, go back to section 1, take a piece from the outside, and cross it over to section 2.
-Take a piece from the outside of section 2, and cross it over to the inside of section 1.
-Repeat until you are ready to finish the braid.
-Secure with hair elastic and you're done!

-Tips & Tricks:
  • I suggest pulling hair taut after you complete a piece to help keep braid from falling.
  • If you have fine hair, try using smaller pieces.
  • You don't have to wear this as a side braid, just try this method for practicing.
  • To give hair texture, try using a dry shampoo, volumizing powder, or beach waves spray on dry hair before braiding. Don't use this on the roots, but instead, put product on fingers and rub through hair.
  • For a bigger braid, try a volumizing shampoo or beach waves spray (the latter makes me hair frizzy and gives me bigger hair). Also, once hair is braided, gently pull at pieces to make the braid a little bit bigger and more undone.
  • For those sprigs of hair (if you're like me and have layers), spray a little dry shampoo on a bobby pin. Insert bumpy side down pushing the sprig back into place. See video for demo.
  • Or you can create an undone braid look by embracing those sprigs of hair. Use beach waves spray, dry shampoo, or texturizing paste to define those pieces.
  • I like allowing a dampened fishtail braid to dry. You can spray it with water after you braid it. Once dry, let the braid out for no heat waves.
-Still need help? I am arranging Google Hangouts for one-on-one tutorials (more details in video). So before you say you can't do it (yes you can!) check out my video tutorial below of the fishtail braid:

Elle's All Day Beauty Tools With Neutrogena (Giveaway)

These products were provided to me by Neutrogena® . Thoughts and opinions are my own.

Think about all of your activities in a typical day--what if you had an all day beauty kit that could take you from one activity to the next? Neutrogena® and ABC’s hit show Nashville created an exclusive 3-part digital series, Nashville All Day Beauty, featuring Hayden Panettiere. Whether she’s performing, enjoying a night out, or just kicking back with friends, this series gives us a glimpse inside Hayden’s daily life in Music City and the Neutrogena® products that help her maintain her flawless glow. Check it out here.

Inspired by the products that Hayden uses to look and feel beautiful during her days, I wanted to let you in on one of my days--from day to night! Check out my All Day Beauty Tools Kit from Neutrogena that I use for every part of my day:

Two facts about this pic: I love mint and here I am with no makeup, wearing a shirt that's 20 years old. Um.

Check out that snazzy blog! Charlie is over the sun and is hiding out!

Morning:
  • I start my day with a cup of coffee, endless emails, and commenting on blogs.
  • After an hour or two of this, Charlie wakes up, and taps me three times, signaling it's time for our morning walk. It's his 4th birthday today, by the way!
  • Since it's daylight in the mornings when we walk, I make sure to put on my Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture Sunscreen (don't forget the hands, too!) before heading out. It's perfect for dry skin, but check out other formulas for your skin type. I know the walk is over when Charlie heads for the shade. ;)
  • But it's time to get ready for work! I take a shower using the classic Rainbath Refreshing Bath & Shower Gel. I debate washing my hair--the Triple Moisture line is awesome--but decide to do it later.

My All Day Beauty Tools from Neutrogena, me and this amazing bubble blaster, and the 4 year old's rainbow

Noon:
  • I'm so lucky that I get to dress super casual for work. I'm a nanny to an awesome 4 year old and 1 month old. We are always running around from activity to activity, so my beauty routine varies. Today, I knew we were going to be outside--a lot--after an unpredictable winter, we grab every opportunity we can. I kept my makeup very simple today, with the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Primer--it has SPF 15 and can be worn with or without makeup. I added foundation, mascara, and finished the look with one of my FAVORITE lip crayons, the MoistureSmooth Color Stick, in Bright Berry. Then I threw my hair into a quick fishtail braid. If you'd like a tutorial, let me know!
  • Here's a peek into my busy day: We headed to the park for a picnic (baby sis is at home with her parents) and play. I added more of the Oil-Free Moisture Sunscreen before our bubble popping adventures. Bubble popping is the 4 year old's specialty. She was not into the picnic on the blanket nor taking pics, but she thought it was hilarious I was using the timer and trying to smile AND not look awkward. Fun day.

Waiting on dinner (turkey burger and fries) and then The Grand Budapest Hotel--I loved it!

Night:
  • I head home, walk Charlie, and start getting ready before dinner and a movie. Before applying foundation I again used the Healthy Skin Primer, but for my eyes I used the Neutrogena Crease Proof Shadow, which instantly brightens my eyes. Next, I took the Nourishing Eyeliner in the outer corner in a sideways V, then blended it with the smudge tip, giving my eyes that almond shape. Thanks to celeb makeup artist Amy Oresman for the tip! Once again, I used the MoistureSmooth Color Stick. I'm making it my mission to get one of every color.
  • I walk Charlie one last time and then it's time for wind down. Before showering, I remove my makeup with the Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover--it even gets rid of waterproof mascara with no oily residue. I like it because I have super sensitive eyes and it doesn't irritate them.
  • Shower time! Rainbath again and this time I wash my hair with the Triple Moisture Cream Lather Shampoo, skipping the conditioner but instead I use the Deep Recovery Hair Mask. I agree with celeb hair stylist Sam Leonardi's suggestion of using plastic wrap around your mask-covered hair to further intensify the moisture. I've done that for years and it works. What I find so crazy is how much my natural wave is enhanced and how much frizz is gone. Try this!
  • I end the night at midnight after finishing the next day's post. A sleepy Charlie is passed out on my pillow and he sighs when I move him. Does your dog sleep on your pillow, too?
  • All in all, a fun and busy day!

So that's just a peek into my day, and how I use tools from Neutrogena for all day beauty.
And now FIVE of you will get All Day Beauty Kits similar to mine!

Simply leave a comment telling me a Neutrogena product you love or want to try.
Also, leave me a valid email to contact you! You may enter twice if desired.
The winner will be chosen May 18, 2014.
Open to US only. Good luck!
