2 Beauty Tools That Deserve A Second Chance

So we all have those beauty products and tools shoved in the back of the drawer, right? We heard they were good, maybe tried them once, and then put them out of sight. Today, I'm encouraging you to give these beauty tools a second try. Let's start with two: eyelash curler and the beautyblender.

The Tool: Eyelash Curler
Why You Won't Try:
  • "My lashes are already curly!"
  • "It will pinch my eyes."
  • "It won't make a difference"

The Reasons It Deserves a Second Chance:
  • Lash curler is a bit of a misnomer. These crafty tools don't curl lashes, but rather, they give lift to lashes.  I've never seen any lashes that didn't benefit from using one.
  • Don't think they make a difference? Look at the pic above. On your left I have curled my lashes, no mascara, vs. nothing on your right.
  • Believe it or not, lash curlers come in sizes! Find one that fits your eye shape. I like Revlon, Kevyn Aucoin (pictured), Sheseido, Shu Uemura, and Surrat.

The Tool: The beautyblender
Why You Won't Try:
  • "It soaks up my foundation."
  • "I don't know how to use it."
  • "It doesn't make a difference."
The Reasons It Deserves a Second Chance:
  • First, I highly, highly recommend the actual beautyblender or the one from Real Techniques. On Thursday I'll have a post on this. There is just no comparison.
  • You MUST saturate the beautyblender to get it to expand. This will cause it to not soak up as much product.
  • It blends and sheers out makeup; gives a natural, flawless, airbrushed, finish; light-med coverage.
  • It helps to remove that cakey look from foundation.
  • Stops creasing under the eyes from certain concealers.

Do you use either of these beauty tools?

Extra Elle:
  • Finally took down my Christmas decorations over the weekend!
  • Had a last minute Golden Globes get together at my house. I'm excited for awards season!
  • I posted some of the how-to for the makeup and hair from the Golden Globes on my Facebook, if interested.

  1. I pushed my Beauty Blender to the side because I honestly felt like my fingers did a better job, but just for you I'll give it a 2nd chance :) xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  5. I've been intimidated by beauty blenders, but love that you said it will help concealer not to cake especially under my eyes which I sometimes have an issue with. Definitely need to try it out <3

  14. I swear by eyelash curler and can't be without it. I don't have a beauty blender mainly because I much prefer using a brush or my fingers for foundation application.

  15. The beauty blender!!! I've always been curious, but still use my FINGERS - gasp! Beauty blunder, lol. I need to just take the plunge I guess!!

  16. I use both of these EVERY day!! I really think the eyelash curler helps me make more awake in the morning, too by lifting my lashes. And, that blender is just such a game changer! Long gone are those yucky sponges from the past!

  18. An eyelash curler is something I use for a fancy night out, but I need to add it to my regular routine. I definitely notice a difference!

  19. I love my beauty blender and I agree everyone should give it another chance. I don't know how anyone would dislike it!

  20. I am terrified to use the curler, but maybe I will give it a try!

  21. thanks for sharing.. i need to look into the beauty blender!

  22. I use my eye lash curler every single day. I can't imagine not having one!!! And I absolutely loved the beauty blender but I threw mine out a month ago. It was starting to fall apart and I felt like no matter what I did, it was never clean enough for me. My face has been breaking out less since I got rid of it. I did love the way it made my make up look. I might try the Real Techniques one since it is cheaper. I wont feel so bad replacing them more often at the lesser price.

  23. I love my beauty blender, but never use an eye lash curler. It just seems like such a hassle. May have to try it again.

  24. I just started using my beauty blender again. Since I switched to using smash box liquid foundation.

  25. I have the Sheseido curler and I absolutely love it! It's worth the price! I have both Beauty Blenders. I like them, but I prefer my O Wow brush now!

  26. I think you wrote this post for me! I have but never use an eye lash curler and I'm not a huge fan of the beauty blender. I actually my BB today for my under eye concealer for the first time in ages.

  27. I never ever ever put on mascara before curling my lashes. Its a must!

  28. I will admit, I've heard a lot of bad things about the beautyblender that I never tried my own. Never even opened the package. I will take your tip to saturate it and give it a try.

  29. These 2 tools are a MUST in my collection! I can't believe people don't use an eyelash curler! I gifted the Tarte eyelash curler to my mom for her birthday, she instantly fell in love and tossed her old one away.

  30. I have never used a lash curler, but you can really tell a difference, even with no mascara on! I also bought the blender, but tried it once and failed. I need to try it again.

  31. I have an eyelash curler and look at it more as a torture device than a beauty tool. I think I use it wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Here are two things I absolutely never use, but you made a great case for why I should pick them up. The difference in your lashes--amazing! And I'd love a more natural finish for foundation, so it sounds like I need to get a beauty blender.

  33. I need to buy a REAL beautyblender! I have a few knock off ones that work okay, but I want to see how much better that one is since I've heard so much about it!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm one of those people super scared of the eyelash curler-Haha! I have one though, and you have inspired me to try it!

  35. I purchased the beauty blender when it was first hyped up. I got caught up in it, then wanted to cry when I had to purchase a new one. I kept rocking back and fourth like $20 sponge... $20 sponge... haha. I went back to using brushes and felt pretty "meh" about it. When someone told me about the RT one I about lost it. It was like angels were singing. I swear I prefer the RT one over BB because of the flat side. (:

  36. I suck at using eye lash curlers so I never use them. I'm lucky enough to have long enough lashes that I don't need them if I wear mascara. I've never used a sponge, I just started using brushes last year and love them.

So sad about Christmas going away :(!

  37. i love the beauty blender and agree it blends foundation really nicely so it's a must try. Wow i haven't curled my eyelashes in years but maybe I should give it another shot!

  38. I've had people use the beauty blender on me, but I've never actually bought one to use at home. I always loved the way my makeup looked after it was used though! I think that I need to give it a second chance!

    ReplyDelete
  39. OMG! How did you know that these are the two products I should give a chance but never ever did?! Well, I might have too... though Im still worried that my eyelashes will break ...

  40. I didn't know people didn't use eyelash curlers! Hahaha my mind is blown! I've used one forever. But I did freak out about them a few years ago because my dad's ex-girlfriend was telling me how she was using one and then someone startled her and she ripped out all her lashes! Yikes!

  41. I have a curler! I might start using it more often.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm OBSESSED with my Beauty Blender but I think I've only used an eyelash curler once. You can def tell a difference in your picture... I may just have to give it a shot!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ok I really need to get myself a REAL Beauty Blender instead of the drugstore fake out!

  44. I think you've convinced me to dig out my eyelash curler again! What a difference!

  45. I don't like using an eyelash curler but they do give a good result. Also, I think the beauty blender is great!!

  47. I haven't used my eyelash curler in years! Maybe I'll start using it again!

  48. I admit, I can't remember the last time I curled my eyelashes. But I used to have one where it basically looked like tweezers that would curl individual sections of your eyelashes. Works better on me because of my face!! #asianproblems

  49. You are so right about the curler! I was given one ages ago, tried it once, stuck at the back of a very deep draw and never touched it again. :) But seeing your eyelashes makes me think of giving it another go... :)

  50. I didn't realize there was a different in eyelash curlers until I got the Tarte Eyelash Curler. I actually look forward to curling my eyelashes now. The beautyblender is hands down my favorite way of applying my foundation. I also find that you can build up your coverage with it. When I want more coverage I will put on a sheer layer with the beautyblender, work on my eyes, and then come back with a bit more product and the beautyblender for slightly more coverage in areas I need.

  51. Definitely had to give the beautyblender a second shot as I was terrible at it the first time lol your tutorial definitely helped :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. woah, it's like you read my mind. these are the exact 2 products i have given up on. i never actually used the beauty blender, my friend uses hers on me all the time but i just prefer my fingers, and if i am going out out then she does my makeup anyway.. so i just gave it to her. i'm intrigued though.
also, every time you post about a lash curler, i think i should give it a go. but i know it's me, not the curler, because no matter what i do or which one i buy, i don't see a difference. i believe you that they are awesome, but i must be doing something wrong. which sucks because my lashes definitely need that lift!

  53. Great reminder! A beauty blender is always fun to use and you can tell a difference.

  54. Elle! Oh my goodness, I have to tell you, I finally got a beauty blender and I LOVE it! I've been wanting to get one for ages after hearing the good things you've said about them on your blog, but I just found it hard to spend that much money on a sponge. I kept thinking that it couldn't be that much better than the knock off from Target. But after you shared that you felt like the original beauty blender was better than any of the knock offs, I knew I had to at least try it. So I asked for one for Christmas and got it... and oh my gracious, I LOVE it! It cuts my makeup time in HALF because it blends so quickly! Love love love! Thank you, Elle!
