This or That: NYX Chunky Dunk Hydrating Lippie Vs. NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil (Coffee Doge Giveaway)

Well, y'all, I am back from the beach! I'm still sick (boo) but am back to posting after a week away (yay). Did you catch all of my posts? I'll have a video up tomorrow talking more about my trip. Please be patient with me as I get caught up on visiting your blogs and responding to your emails. But for now, check out my weekly series This or That, where I compare two similar products. This time I'm comparing two lips products from NYX. Enjoy.

First up is a new NYX product, the Chunky Dunk Hydrating Lippie. I cannot with that name, y'all, but after a month, I can review it. NYX has joined the lip crayon bandwagon!

  • Considered to be in the "lip gloss" category on NYX
  • Sheer, but buildable
  • glossy, shiny, moisturizing
  • twistable bottom, no sharpening
  • can be used alone or over lip liner
  • 12 shades
  • $6

When the Chunky Dunk came out, I immediately wondered if it was similar to an established NYX product, the NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil. Is the Chunky Dunk just a repackaged version of the Jumbo Lip Pencil (like Covergirl's BB Cream vs. CG Smoothers)? I'm glad to say these are two different products.
  • categorized under the "lip pencil" category
  • medium-full coverage
  • creamy
  • sharpens
  • lip liner and lipstick in one
  • $4.50
  • 24 shades
This or That:
These are two different products, as the lip crayon is hydrating and sheer, while the lip pencil is creamy with more coverage. While I liked the lip crayon, I wouldn't repurchase it as it is too sheer for my preference, but would consider other shades. It reminds me of versions from Covergirl, Sally Hansen, NYC, or ELF. I personally prefer the lip pencils, as they last longer. They are creamy and not as moisturizing, but are still very nice.

And now, for a STARBUCKS giveaway! My sweet blogger friend Rachel (you follow her blog, right?) contacted me about hosting this giveaway. Her husband Christopher has a new website The Coffee Doge that sells Starbucks products (think giftcards, coffee, K-Cups, syrups, and MORE) at a discount.

The winner of the giveaway gets to choose any one item from The Coffee Doge website. This includes the highest-valued gift card ($25), which is awesome just in case you don't make coffee at home and wouldn't want the Kcups, coffee, syrups, etc.

In order to enter the giveaway you must:

1. Go to the website and pick out what they would like to win

Giveaway ends June 3rd, 2014. Good luck!

  1. I really like the second one! I think it's not just about the creamy finish, but also has something to do with the shade and design. x

  2. Thanks so much for reviewing these! For some reason, I just don't wear lipstick well, so I would probably lean toward trying the first one. I usually love all NYX products!

  3. Hope u feel better soon, Elle! And I really must try NYX. The Chunky Dunk sounds great for everyday use.

  4. Welcome back! I have the NYX kind and agree that it's more of a balm in color than a lipstick.

  5. Sorry you are still not feeling well, but looks like you had fun from your instagram pics! Thanks for the review! I sometimes like more sheer coverage so I might give the first one a try!

  6. I've been wanting to try the Chunky Dunk (HATE the name), I heard it a lot of good things about it! I feel like I'd like the second one better though since it doesn't have the shine. Maybe I'll just try both! :)

    <3, Pamela

  7. Welcome back. I hope you start feeling better soon

  8. I love all NYX products!! But, knowing me.. I would probably buy both lol thanks for reviewing!

  9. I seriously just love the name of the one NYX product - chunky dunk...I mean too funny! Fell better!!

  10. While the name is kinda funny, I'd go for the Chunky Dunk!

I'd pick the $25 Starbucks gift card if I won. Liked their FB page and following on Twitter.

  11. Chunky Dunk is such a weird name! I do not want to put chunky dunk on my lips! LOL! Kisses and I am glad you are back but sad to hear that you are sick! Sissi www.beauty4free2u.com

  12. I saw these new lip pencils at Ulta yesterday, but I didn't pick any up. I don't think I will be if you think they're on the sheer side. Thanks for the review Elle!

  13. Chunky Dunk is a weird name! I never liked the original NYX pencils, they were too slippery on me. But super-sheer doesn't sound like my cup of tea either :P

  14. Interesting name lol. I like both lip crayons and lip pencils. Haven't tried Nyx yet. Thanks for sharing

  15. Thanks for sharing! They seem like they would be the same thing just based off the name, so thank you for explaining!

  16. I just really like the name Chunky Dunk. Haha! I tend to go for more glosses so it might be right up my alley!

  17. Hahaha! Love the name Chunky Dunk. So funny.

  18. Those are such pretty colors for summer!!! :)

  19. I'd prefer the chunky, maybe because the applicator is thicker

  20. I think I'd end up preferring the crayon. I tend to go for glossy, though. Useful review! Thank you!

  21. Great comparison review. The "Chunky Dunks" sound nice but I really like more pigmentation. I would probably like the NYX Jumbo Lip Pencil if its anything like the Bite Beauty ones.

  22. I'm not a lip gloss kinda gal, so the lip pencil gets my vote.

I followed all your steps to win glorious coffee but I am not sure how to tell you about that. Except that I kinda just did? hehe. Sorry you've had the sickies!

    1. Allow me to amend: In for a GC! I so rarely splurge with a coffee out :)

  23. I think I'll give Chunky Dunk a try...just too irresistible! LOL!

  24. I like the NYX pencils. They have pretty decent staying power for a crayon type of product. Not sure if I can purchase a product called Chunky Dunk...I just don't know...

  25. I'd have to go with a couple bags of glorious coffee... Italian and Gold Coast. Is this where we enter the giveaway? Just want to make sure I do it right. :)

CUTE FURBABY! (But you already know that!!)

  26. i haven't really dabbled in these crayons aside from one purchase that i ended up returning. but they just look so fun and easy to use and have in your bag. i'll have to give them another try this summer.

  27. Oh I didn't even know that nyx carried these products, I haven't been to an Ulta in awhile. But yeah I'm intrigued by the Jumbo lip pencil because I have a few of the Jumbo eye pencils so I'm wondering if i'll like the lip ones. Every time I visit your blog there's always something new I want to try! hehe :)

  28. Hi..I hope I'm entering this right! Do I need to make separate posts for each entry? I would choose the $25 Starbucks Gift Card I think. Although the chocolate syrup looks good!
