12 Months of Resolutions: October & September Revisited

Each month I attempt a different resolution,
in the hopes that the resolutions will last longer than a month.
See past resolutions here.

For September, my resolution was to read every day. .

Grade: A+

Notes:  I promised I would read some of a book every day. And not just mags, either! In total, I read 23 books (and my usual magazines too). I admit, some of the books were style or beauty books, and I could read a couple of those in a day. To help, I kept a book or two on hand, and used my time wisely.

Would I do this again? Sure, but I felt like I was back in college, and trying to cram in reading. I really put pressure on myself to read a lot. Therefore, I also found that my blog posts suffered a bit, since I used most of my spare time reading books and responding to blog comments.

For October, I am stepping out of my comfort zone and saying YES to every opportunity. I tend to be quite a wallflower (unless a microphone is involved), and will just do a little laugh and whisper "no" to many things in life. It's my Birthday month, and it's about dang time I started doing living it up.
I'm leaving this up to fate, and letting things happen organically, instead of planning a list of things to do.

AND since it's my birthday month (& I got away so easy last month) I'm doing a bonus resolution: accept compliments. I'm horrible at this, are you? I always think the compliment is an ulterior motive for something else. Or sometimes I just don't believe them. But this month, that's all changing!

Let's see where life takes me this month...

It truly baffles me that some people have trouble accepting compliments, your perspective provided a little more insight!

  15. I started trying to focus on being more gracious about accepting compliments when I realized how annoying it was to compliment other people and get the "this old thing?" kind of reaction. Then I noticed I did the same thing! Now I try to just say thank you very genuinely and I share a little bit about where I got it or why I like it or just something about whatever is being complimented. So, it turns the compliment into more of a conversation :)

  16. I love the commitment to say YES to every opportunity. After a particular bad breakup, I tried something similar. It got me back into the swing of things so fast, and I also met some amazing people along the way!

  20. You read 23 books in one month? Yowza. i consider myself a reader, but I think I'd read that in three months! One day, I will be a fast reader. (Not today, though.)

  21. This is such a great idea and such a great resolution. I should do something like this because I'm not much of a reader. I loved it! Thanks for sharing.

  22. I really like this - resolutions shouldn't just be for once a year. I don't like receiving compliments - it makes me feel like I'm being judged

  30. Happy birthday month! Those are great resolutions. I know what you mean about taking compliments; I'm bad at getting them. But then I remember how awkward it is when I compliment someone and they deflect it. So I just shut up, smile and say, "thank you." :)

  33. wow. 23 books. I haven't finished a book since 2007 when I started blogging, lol. Nice job! Also... the saying yes to every opportunity is pretty fantastic. I find I say yes more than NO now and it's a much better life. I am however, in a much better place than I once was. Good luck, you can do it :) And Happy Birth-month!

  37. Good luck this month! Back in 2008, I made it my Summer of Yes. I said yes to pretty much every opportunity that came my way. Believe it or not, that's the main reason I went on date with The Boyfriend. Three years later, it was the best "yes" moment of my life. :)

  40. awesome ideas!!! I love the plan to do it every month. I am horrible at accepting compliments most of the time too, it should be so easy but I always feels so inclined to explain that I got something on sale... WHHHHY! Happy Birthday Month!

  41. Congrats on your resolution to read! That's awesome! Also Happy Early Birthday-and I am bad at accepting compliments as well! Although flattering, they make me feel a little embarrassed.

  42. Happy Birthday Month! Do you know what is sad? I'm bad at receiving compliments because they make me uncomfortable, so I rarely hand them out too because I don't want to make people uncomfortable. What sort of psychological crap is that?
