You love beauty products that make your skin look great on the outside but what about looking great via what you put inside? Look no further--you've got BOTH today. And you can find everything at Publix. They feature Allure winning beauty products from brands you love and trust like St. Ives--you'll be sure to find what you need to address any beauty concern. Combine them with healthy foods to create a beauty regimen and you will have a great recipe that will benefit you from the inside and out. My fave food and beauty combo involves Mandarin oranges--via a fab body wash and a tasty salad. Post Sponsored by Lunchbox. All opinions are 100% my own.

First up--the outside. Get your skin soft and smooth with St. Ives Even & Bright Pink Lemon & Mandarin Orange Body Wash. This smells incredible and invigorating. Plus, it exfoliates to polish away those little imperfections--it's made with 100% natural exfoliants and is paraben-free.

And now, the inside. Let's get your skin glowing and amazing with this yummy Salmon + Mandarin Orange Salad. Feel free to modify this for your tastes. It's effortless and you can make it for lunch tomorrow! EVERYTHING in here is good for you.

You'll Need:
  • Salmon
  • Spinach
  • Mandarin Oranges
  • Almonds
  • Oil + Vinegar
  • Optional: Goat Cheese Crumbles, Salt + Pepper

Place the spinach in a bowl--add as much as you want--and then begin the dressing. Squeeze some of the Mandarin oranges and mix in a little olive oil and vinegar. Add a dash of salt, pepper, and olive oil to the salmon and then grill it until done--around 3 minute per side. For some crunch, throw in a small handful of silvered almonds. For sweetness add some Mandarin orange slices, and finish with a few crumbles of goat cheese.

  • Fastest weekend ever--some of my family came up to visit the aquarium. I joined them and saw my nephew (the oldest one) and my 4 month old niece (the youngest one). My nephew had such a good time. Then I went a pool party--so much fun until the rain started. Rain=late afternoon nap. Woke up and it was dark. Yikes! How was your weekend?

Easy, Quick New Year's Eve Makeup

Happy New Year's Eve! What are your plans? If you're looking for an easy, quick look, you're in the right place! Today I'm sharing classic makeup looks that look great on everyone, because let's be honest, no one has time for the smokey eye or practicing playing with adding glitter. Enjoy!

5 Minutes to Get Ready:

  • Oily skin? Blot face with Starbucks napkins.
  • Apply a shimmery shadow to the center of lids with your pointer finger. Gently blend out on the sides of lid with ring finger. My favorite is Stila's Kitten.
    • Not into shadow? Dab a tiny amount of plain Chapstick to lids for shine.
  • Curl lashes and add mascara
    • Already wearing mascara? Gently curl base of lashes with lash curler (your lashes will be fine as long as you gently apply pressure) or with a metal spoon.
  • Apply red lip crayon to lips. This is the easiest way to wear red lips. I like versions by Revlon (original or matte formula), Jordana, The Big Lip Pencil.
    • Still feel intimidated? Outline and fill in lips with a red lip liner and add a clear gloss or Chapstick on top.
  • If needed, use a makeup setting spray (or make your own using Witch Hazel). These are available in dewy and matte formulas. I like Urban Decay, Skindavinia, NYX, or Model in a Bottle.

quick, easy nye makeup

NYE Makeup Tips:
-If you have 15 minutes or more, try these tips!

  • If you're starting from foundation, and you need your makeup to last all night, spray your face first with a makeup setting spray. Then apply primer (if desired), moisturizer (if desired), foundation, concealer, and powder as usual. Spray again.
  • For lids, you cannot beat neutral shimmery shadows. And palettes featuring them can be found at any budget. I'm wearing the Eye on Neutral Shimmer one pictured from Sonia Kashuk at Target, but I also love the Pop one I featured in my latest Ipsy bag or the Naked 2 Palette. This Almay trio is a fave of mine as well.
    • Start with a light shimmery shade all over the lid. In the crease, blend out a brown shimmer shadow. It should be darkest in the crease and blended out towards the brow. Next, add the darkest brown in the outer "v" of the eye. Blend and blend that same shadow under the lower lash line.
    • If you're not into all of that but want a little sparkle, I like champagne shimmery shadows for those with lighter skin and golden shimmery shadows for darker complexions, but wear what you like!
  • I love a little eyeliner flick, and it's much easier than you think! The key is to use an angeled eyeliner brush. These can be purchased for really cheap, like ELF or Sonia Kashuk (pictured). I use a gel liner for this--Wet N Wild and Maybelline are some good drugstore options. I start at the outer edge of my eye and imagine I'm drawing a tiny flick in the direction as if to meet the end of my eyebrow. Here's an old tutorial of this.
  • If you're into false lashes, my best tip is to cut them in half or thirds. But for something easier, I really have been loving the L'Oreal Butterfly mascara. Other favorites include Maybelline Big Eyes or Too Faced Better Than Sex mascaras.
  • Highlighter brushed above cheekbones is gorgeous for a night out. I used The Balm's May Lou-Manizer, which shows really well in non-flash photos (I use it more for this than in real life) but I also recommend Revlon's Skinlights (liquid), Wet N Wild's Reserve Your Cabana, Hard Candy's Tiki, or MAC MSF.
  • You can't beat a red lip, but if you want something a little less low-maintenance, you need a lip crayon. Revlon's original lip crayons (pictured) or the new matte ones are so easy to apply.
  • Complete your look with a gold glitter polish. These can be found for every budget.

Quick Tips: (Unusual) NYE On-the-Go Kit

In addition to the usual items (check out my original NYE Survival Kit) you would ordinarily pop in your purse, consider adding these unusual items to your NYE On-the-Go Kit:

Lip Balm (plain)
  • rub on your heels before wearing shoes to help avoid blisters
  • place on minor cuts/shaving knicks
  • tame unruly eyebrows
  • rub on dry elbows/knees
  • removes clumps on lashes

Starbucks Napkins
  • for blotting lipstick
  • blot oily skin (toilet seat covers work too)
  • Check out my other Starbucks Beauty Tips

Dryer Sheet
  • tame flyaways in hair
  • reduce static in clothes
  • eliminates stinky hair

Interdental Brush--These tiny brushes used to clean braces are a staple in my bag. There are over a dozen uses:
  • from taming eyebrows and baby hairs
  • to exfoliating lips (you gotta be kissable at midnight!).

Mini Toothpaste
  • In addition to whiter teeth and fresher breath
  • try it to wash smells from your hands
  • quickly whiten shoes.

Sugar Substitute Packet
  • Pour onto a grease spot and allow the sugar to harden and soak up the grease. Brush away and the spot will be gone! This works best if it's instantly applied.

After the Evening:
Dry Shampoo
  • Spray on armpit area of clothes (not skin) or inside of shoes to remove smell.
  • Spray dry shampoo or touchable scented hairspray on your hair and brush through after a minute or so. It will help prevent stinky hair after a long night out, if you're too tired to wash your hair. See how to use dry shampoo here.

Baby Wipes (or makeup wipes)--If you're too tired to wash your face after a long night out, remove makeup with these.

Hangover Mask & Hangover Helpers--Use yogurt on your face after a night out to refresh your skin. See the whole Hangover Mask post here. Also, look at these Hangover Helpers.

ELLE ENTERTAINS: Hot Cocoa Bar

Merry Blogmas! It's Day 16! One of my resolutions for NEXT year (so far that's the only resolution I've come up with) is to actually finish a blog draft or two a week (of 750). Well, one of them, from 2010 (eep!) was for this party. And this weekend IT IS ON! This is a fabulous idea for those that love to entertain but would like an inexpensive party. I was originally going to do this in the winter, but why not now? Check out my inspiration boards:

Decor:
Since my house is already decorated for Christmas (with a Hanukkah vase for good measure), I'm not doing anything special (yet another reason to have this party--decorations are done!).
Panoramic of my teeny apt in the midst of decorating 2 week ago.
I'm indecisive (LIBRA!); note clear and white lights.

The Bar:
I wanted to show three different options for the bar set ups. Since I will have regular and alcohol hot cocoa, I will have two different areas.

The Glasses:
I got my glasses at the Dollar Store--no joke. And I love the idea of the clear glass ornaments for cocoa! Cute!

The Drinks:

  • The traditional hot cocoa will be in a Crock Pot--it will make serving/hosting easier.
  • As for the bar-bar, I hate it when someone/hostess gets stuck playing Bartender. I'll have recipes/suggestions written out so guests can fix what they'd like. The bottom two pictures are mine--I just made the Spiked Marshmallow Cocoa to try it out for the party (success!), and the Mint Mocha is from a post last year. Check out my Dollar Tree glass and my Goodwill Santa mug!
The Stir Ins:
If I don't go the clear ornament route (I might fill them with dry mix as parting gifts instead), I love these stir ins.

Snacks:
Perhaps a beignet or donut hole would make a nice snack. What do you think? All pics via Pinterest or my phone!

What holiday parties are you attending this year? Or throwing?

Virtual Fall Feast!

Today I'm linking up with Hilary's blog, Baking Bad, for a Virtual Fall Feast
Visit her blog to see what the other ladies have cooked up!
I wanted to share 2 fool-proof and tasty recipes I made: S'mores Cupcakes and Spiked Hot Chocolate. Both are perfect for a chilly autumn night. Enjoy.

S'mores Cupcakes
S'mores are such a great treat, but city living doesn't allow for me to whip up a campfire and make s'mores. Fortunately, these s'mores cupcakes recreate the taste without the mess, and are a little more grown up in a way. I created several options, so find what works best for you!

Ingredients:
  • Box of chocolate cake mix (follow box directions)
  • Graham crackers (I crumbled them up, but you can grind them up in a food processor)
  • Marshmallows
  • Marshmallow fluff
  • Chocolate bars (I used Hershey)
Options:

I prepared the cake mix according to package directions.
OPTION 1: I put smushed up graham crackers on the bottom of each cupcake liner. I poured in a little cake mix, and added my chocolate bar, poured more mix, and baked according to package directions.
Once there were about 3 minutes left in baking, I added a marshmallow on top and put in the oven to toast. Sprinkle a little more graham crackers if you like on top.
OPTION 2: Put the marshmallow in the bottom of the liner. Cover with cake mix. Top with graham cracker crumbs. Bake and add a Hershey's kiss on top once baked.
OPTION 3: Prepare like Option 1, but instead of adding a marshmallow, once baked, add a graham cracker, cover with marshmallow fluff and add a Hershey's kiss on top (the one pictured is the Pumpkin Spice Kiss).
OPTION 4: Just like option 3, but put the finished product under the broiler (while watching!) for a minute or two to toast the top!
The finished product, next to a pumpkin!
The yummy goodness all melted!

Hot Spiked Chocolate

  • Cook hot chocolate according to package directions
  • Add Amaretto & stir
  • Add cream or marshmallows
  • Options: Frangelico, Kahlua, or Bailey's Irish Cream

Elle Entertains: Halloween Movie Marathon Party

Usually I'm the one throwing the parties, but since I'm out of town this week+weekend (PHILLY!), I'm not having a Halloween bash. Instead, one of my friends asked me for partying planning advice and I was happy to whip up an inspiration board for her. Her daughter turns 14 on Halloween (how cool is that?) and she wanted to have a Halloween Movie Marathon party (I was specifically told not a slumber party because she's 14, ahem). So Kayla, happy early birthday (the party is tonight!) and hope you like your party! Click links to learn more!

It's all about creating a spooky atmosphere and setting the mood.
To keep it creepy, keep the lights off (minus the tv and I'm sure cell phones will be a glowin') and use candlelight, glow sticks, and blacklight. Can't trust kids around candles? Twinkly lights, glow sticks, glow-in-the-dark paint or LED candles also could be used.

For food, Mom's ordering pizza (Kayla's request) and having birthday cake, but the girls still need some movie snacks.

  • I like my parties to have a signature drink, and this party will have Vampire Punch--the drinks listed have alcohol, but simply leave it out. Add some dry ice to be even creepier. And don't forget, tonic water glows! Bonus tip: Stick a small glowstick or glow bracelet in the bottom of a clear, plastic cup. Stack another cup on top and viola, glow-in-the-dark cups!
  • Soda and water keep cool in pumpkin ice buckets. I'd have the bucket backlit with candles or flickering LED lights (flameless candles).
  • Salty and sweet go great together, and popcorn and candy are staples of movie-viewing, so this Halloween popcorn is the best of both world. Lots of ideas on that link, btw.
  • Need horror movie ideas? Check out this site.
  • For another birthday activity, try these Halloween nails!

Have a spooky and safe weekend! Attending any Halloween parties this weekend? What's your favorite scary movie? They terrify me!

DIY: Etched Glass Bottle

How was your weekend? Mine was great--I went to visit my fam and had a pre-bday celebration. I crossed a few items off my Autumn Bucket List too. I ended up getting the curling wand I wanted from my Birthday Wishlist! Thanks, fam!

As any long-time reader of my blog knows, I love to entertain...I love it. I enjoy hosting guests and hosting parties, and when I do those, I try to make even the smallest things special. Take, for example, the small act of serving water at dinner or a party. Instead of just having guests get a bottle of water from the fridge, I want to take it up a notch. See how I did it below:

MATERIALS:

  • empty, clean,wine bottle
  • etching cream
  • exacto knife
  • stencil (use one pre-made with a design or but and make your own)
  • masking or painter's tape
  • small paint brush (foam or bristle)
METHOD:
  • Acquire a wine bottle--I bought mine, but if not a drinker, don't worry! Plenty of businesses do wine tastings--ask them to save you a bottle for free!
  • Clean the wine bottle and soak to remove labels. If that doesn't work, try rubbing alcohol to remove labels.
  • Choose a design for your stencil--stencils can be pre-made or you can make your own, like I did. I found a font I liked, printed it out on paper, and traced onto a stencil. I used a green Sharpie just so you could see the tracing better.
  • Here it is traced. Notice I was over tracing "water" and just did a "w!" ;)
  • Using an exacto knife, or some sharp something that cuts through plastic, cut out the design.
  • Take stencil and tape to bottle.

  • Using brush, apply a heavy coat of etching cream over design.
  • If your stencil is pre-made, wait 1 minute. These types of stencils are self-adhesive as well. If you made  your own, like mine, wait at least 5 minutes.
  • Rinse off and remove tape & stencil.

without water
  • Allow to dry and enjoy! Use a funnel to help add water.
MORE IDEAS:
Not a fan of water? Try these ideas:
  • soda (be careful it doesn't overflow!)
  • alcohol
  • kool-aid
  • tea
  • lemonade
  • sparkling water
  • flavored water:
    • lemon
    • lime
    • lemon & lime
    • lemon & basil
    • orange
    • pineapple
    • berries
    • mint
    • ginger
    • cucumber
  • more wine bottle ideas

Elle Entertains: Movie Under the Stars

Happy first day of fall! One of the items on my Summer Bucket List was to host a Movie Under the Stars. And recently, I did! However, everything that could've gone wrong did. Sad face. But like any good (ha) hostess, I quickly changed plans and rallied. Even though things didn't turn out like I planned, everyone had fun. Happy face. This party was really cheap to put together too. Pass the popcorn, because you're invited:
{inspiration before Mother Nature Changed Said Plans}

{1,2,3}
  1. My DIY project of paper bag luminaries was super easy--just use a hole punch! Unfortunately, it rained most of the day so I saved these and will use another time.
  2. I wanted to use bean bags and such to lounge on, but it was too cold and wet so beach chairs came to the rescue!
  3. Because of the rain, we ended up not using a backyard movie screen, but here's how to make one. Luckily, I had a friend who owned a projector, which we hooked up through his computer to play the movie. We kept all equipment on the porch and showed the movie on the side of the apartment building.
{1,2,3,4}
  1. To keep it all super cheap, I just used typical movie snacks, but with a twist--we had a Popcorn Bar. Candy, butter, seasonings, were offered to good ole microwave popcorn.
  2. I made these Rum & Coke Slushies but it was so cold, I had hot chocolate on hand too.
  3. Mexican Coke was available too. And I totally think I can tell the difference despite what studies say!
  4. Cute straws make anything taste better. Am I right?
So there ya have it: my budget-friendly Movie Under the Stars. I definitely want to try this again in autumn and already have lots of ideas a-brewing.

Have a great weekend! What're your plans? I'm hanging out with my Lil Sis.
PS: I'm Guest Posting for Molly on A Foreign Land....go check it out!

Elle Entertains: Tequila Tasting Party

For this month's Elle Entertains, I decided to have a Tequila Tasting party! I went to a tequila tasting once in Mexico and didn't fully remember appreciate the experience. That would all change this go around! So why tequila? I wanted something less highbrow than a wine party but also summery and festive. Read on for the party details:

sources 1,2,3
For the decor, I was influenced by plates I bought in Mexico. I used them to display food and such. I also included lemons & limes in a couple of vases--I skipped the flowers this go around. See other uses for vases in THIS post I did. I used the lemons & limes as place card holders to denote the types of tequilas. More on that later.

sources 1,2,3
For the tasting, I used wine glasses (not shot glasses!) to hold tasting samples, as recommended. The key here is to swirl, sniff, sip, and swallow--just like at a wine tasting. I am definitely not a tequila aficionado, but I became one for this party! How? I did my research online (I suggest tequilarack.com). I also went to my local Total Wines store and talked to a tequila expert (seriously!). It also didn't hurt having an acquaintance who knows a lot about tequila as well.

There are 3 types of tequila I used: blanco, reposado, and anejo. Luckily, by all of my research, I learned it all didn't have to be top shelf tequila. I had the place cards that denoted the type and then I wrote information about the brand/type of tequila on an index card next to the bottle. Sangrita is recommended as a pallet cleanser, so I whipped up a batch and served that in shot glasses. It tastes like a spicier tomato juice. It's not bad at all.

Once guests decided what tequila they liked (some after multiple sips, ahem), I directed them to pour a shot and head to my Margarita Mixing Station. I had three premade mixes: regular, strawberry, and peach. Additionally, there was a batch of Yucca Drink (or Watapuli) with tequila already in it. Of course, some guests chose to do shots instead (!!!) or drink the margaritas without alcohol. I had water in a used, cleaned, label-removed wine bottle too.

 sources 1,2,3

Yes, there was more than tequila sippin' and drink mixin.' I had some snacks as well. I started off with chips, salsa and guacamole (with my recipe seen here). I served ceviche, which was surprisingly easy to make. Fish tacos from Atlanta's Taqueria del Sol were devoured quickly. For dessert, a friend brought over Margarita Cheesecake Bars (non-alc).

Summer Week! Elle Entertains: Kickoff to Summer Pool Party

My party for this month is a Kickoff to Summer party! Luckily, my apartment complex has a nice pool, so that served as the setting. A beach, le sigh, would’ve been even better! Here’s how I did it:

Décor--

Food--
I wanted things that were nice and cool and didn't require a lot of preparation.

Drinks--
Ok, this is the section everyone asks about when I announce a party: What are we drinking? In addition to plenty of non-alc refreshments, I wanted to change things up in the cocktail department.

  • I served alcohol Snow Cones (or you could make Shaved Ice). Everyone went crazy over these, and they were easy to make! For the Snow Cones, I used my blender to crunch up some ice, placed the ice in Snow Cone cups (via Target), and poured a shot or two of Pina Colada or Blueberry Martini (blue & white theme!) over the ice.
  • I also made Cosmo Pops--both were a big hit!
Are you having a summer pool party? Or any party this summer? Do tell in the comments.
Have a great weekend! I'll be back Monday with even more summer goodies. Love, Elle

Elle Entertains: Spring Ladies' Brunch

I seem to have a pattern of big party one month & then a small gathering the next. This month is no different. After the big John Hughes 80s party last month, I wanted something a little more subdued. This weekend (weather permitting) I’m having a Spring Ladies’ Brunch. It’ll be a great opportunity for my friends and I to gossip catch up. This would be perfect for Easter, Mother’s Day, or a shower. There are so many ways to dress this up; the choice is up to you (and budget). So put on your cutest spring dress & let’s see my inspiration board. You’re invited!

Decor:
I’m going with colors that I associate with spring: green, white, and yellow. I’ll have a white tablecloth with a green runner and yellow daffodils in milk-white vases from Trader Joes. I have green plates that will complement the runner nicely. Yellow & green lanterns will hang from the trees above.

Food:
The main dish will be a breakfast burrito bar. This is perfect for those of all food preferences. There will be whole-wheat tortillas, scrambled eggs, black beans, rice, cheeses, diced peppers, sausage, grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce, salsa & sour cream. Hungry yet?
For dessert, I’ll offer coffee cake and a fruit bowl. Fruit will be served in hollowed out cantaloupes. I would recommend a watermelon to hold your fruit in if in season & your party is larger.

Drinks:
My Spa Cooler (see recipe here) will be the main offering. In addition I’ll serve cucumber water (it’s so refreshing!), and mimosas.

I hope you have a great weekend & enter my giveaway if you haven't! It ends soon!
