Dupe? Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray Vs. Kristin Ess Dry Finish Working Texture Spray

Hey y'all! I'm trying something a little different today--normally I throw in a tidbit of my life at the end, so I'm trying adding it at the beginning. So this week has gone by in a blur--I had a couple of days off. I had grand plans, but stayed in my pjs pretty much the time. Of course I changed into different pjs at night. ;) And yesterday I was back at work and had a lovely day with the kids. I stopped by Trader Joe's for one thing--isn't that always how it is?--and ended up with quite a haul of new things. I've been trying to take life easy lately.

But while I was there, a lady complimented my on my hair, which always freaks me out. One day I'll learn how to take a compliment without (a) freaking out (b) thinking there are ulterior motives. Anyway, normally I just say thanks and run away, but this time I told her exactly what I did and used (the products on this post), and then went into a tangent about dupes and well, here we are. I'm comparing the $44 Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray to $14 Kristin Ess Dry Finish Working Texture Spray.

What Is a Dry Texturizing Spray?

Part dry shampoo, part hairspray, this product is designed to give texture and some volume to dried hair. It does not take the place of dry shampoo.

How Do You Use Dry Texturizing Spray?

This depends on the brand, but Garnier says from roots to mid shaft, about 8-12 inches, scrunching optional. Oribe says 5-6 inches from roots and tousle hair.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray
$44

8.5 0z but there is a purse size available that is half price

"Bigger, better, full-on glamorous hair. This invisible dry hair spray builds in incredible volume and sexy texture. Patented polymers absorb oil at the roots, leaving you with just-styled hair for days (and nights)."

Purchase: Salons, Nordstrom, Beautylish, Neiman Marcus, online

Kristin Ess Dry Finish Working Texture Spray

$14

6.9 oz

Create a soft matte texture or lived-in look by applying a light veil all over. Focus mostly on the roots and middle of the hair.

Contains Zip-Up Technology™, our proprietary strengthening complex designed to "zip-up" split ends while targeting weak areas of the hair, smoothing the appearance of damaged cuticles and helping to protect hair from environmental stressors and color fade.

Purchase: Target

So is it a dupe or not? I will say that I prefer the scent and hold better of the Oribe, but the Kristin Ess (hairstylist for Lauren Conrad) version is really great and is a wonderful option.

Have you tried either version?

  1. I have the purse size version of the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray and it has lasted forever. I can't ever go into Trader Joe's and come out with just one thing either ;p

  2. I always go into Trader Joe's for one or two things and end up with a few shopping bags full. I haven't tried a texturizing spray but now I really want to try the Oribe!

  4. I've never tried this, but it could be exactly what I need. I get into such a rut with what I use in my hair---no wonder it's not as gorgeous as yours!!

  6. Hi Elle, I have never used this type of spray before but it sounds really good. I really like the way your hair looks with both sprays but the cheaper dupe is nice that it's not as expensive! Thanks for this review and I will have to try out this type of spray.
Hope you have a nice day.

  17. First of all your hair is glorious!!! I just got a sample of this spry in my Birch Box and I really don't know how to use it. So, do you lift your hair or spray on top like a hair spray? I am excited to try! Thanks!

  18. Your hair is fab! Mine is just poker straight that never does much. Though I do love it after a day in the sea, or even the pool/sun. I could defo use some volume and texture...

  19. I've never tried a texturizing spray just because my hair has so much natural texture. Sometimes a little extra volume is nice though, especially when I am styling day old hair. I'll keep these in mind!
