Life Lately: Extra Elle

Normally, at the end of my posts I share something personal that's happening, but my posts have been so chock full of info this week, that I left it out. They were already long enough. ;) So today I'm sharing my Life Lately.

I got the saddest news yesterday. There was a two year little boy from my hometown that passed away from cancer. I hate that this is a common occurrence now and especially in my small hometown. While I did not know him personally, I knew of his family, and my niece Stella was best friends with him. They all go to the same church. I followed his story from when he was diagnosed in July, to the surgery, to the heartbreaking news that the chemo didn't work, to the devastating news over Christmas that after another round of chemo there was nothing they could do.

Around 3 or 4 am yesterday, I sat straight up in bed thinking he had passed away. I couldn't go back to sleep. Yesterday, he did pass away in the early afternoon. I know he's pain-free now, but it's so heartbreaking. My heart breaks for his family and his big sister. He was born the day after the youngest girl I nanny for, so I broke my work rule of never crying and held her and cried. Sometimes you just need to hold a baby (or a pup) to make it better.

But the amazing thing of this was the way my hometown came together. Everyone donated or somehow did something to help that family. I don't think there was one person not affected by his story. That little boy and his family are covered in prayers. I didn't like growing up in a small town--I saw a lot of small mindedness, a lot of prejudice, and a lot of not accepting others. But in times like this, it makes me proud of my roots. Prayers for the family of Camp.

                                                             -------------------------

How about some good news? I feel silly talking about my life after such sadness, but I don't want to end this post on a sad note. My weekend was nice--the weather has been unseasonably warm, so it's been great to play with the kids. I got rid of a ton of stuff, including over 50 books, which was so hard, but needed to be done. I ran all the boring grown up errands, so it was a productive weekend.

I got my hair cut and a little lighter yesterday. It's always the best feeling getting your hair done. Instant mood lifter.

I also got new sheets and they are amazing. The smallest of things makes me happy! You can tell you're an adult if you get excited to sleep, ha ha.

What's new with you?

  1. I will be keeping that boy’s family in my thoughts and prayers. I can’t even imagine what they are going through. One of my favorite things about being from a small town, is how easy it is to get everyone to band together to help out. It’s easy to feel like there aren’t many good people left in the world, but times like that remind me that there are plenty and a lot of them are right down the road. I am all about fresh sheets and sleeping. I’m looking forward to sleeping into tomorrow. Sometimes knowing I get to sleep in on Saturday is the only thing that gets me through the week haha enjoy your weekend!

  4. Oh man... We just had a local girl who just turned 18 & passed away. I hate cancer. It just never makes sense when a young life is taken away. Has to feel like there's a purpose & reason that we'll learn one day.

  12. Cancer is such a terrible disease, it has taken the lives of too many. Very saddened to hear about the boy in your hometown. Thanks for sharing, it's never easy when anyone dies from cancer, and even worse when it's a child.

  17. So sorry to hear about the little boy. How sad. :(

It's been unseasonably warm here too. One day it's cold the next it feels like a wonderful Spring day. But hey we gotta take advantage of the nice days while we can.

  18. Oh, Elle... I am so sorry for the boy... I had a tough week, and I did cry more than twice last week... so when I read this now, it really resonated with me, not only because the little boy passed away, and had so much life to be lived... but for the fact that his family is suffering - we don't need to know people to know what they are feeling and be sad, somehow. I could really picture you holding the little girl :( Life isn't fair, many times :( On a happier note, you are right, doing the hair is an instant mood lifter! I will do that next week, for my b-day :) Hope you are feeling better now, sincerely :)

  21. So sad to hear about the little boy from your hometown! Childhood cancer has to be the saddest thing ever. My mom's niece passed away last year from cancer, and a little boy that went to school with my nephew did as well.

  22. So sorry to hear about that! It's especially hard when children pass away because they haven't even had the chance to live. I hope one day cancer will no longer be the scary diagnosis it is now. I'll be praying for that family!

  27. Man, I can't even imagine what that family is going through and my heart is sore for them. My hometown experienced an evil that I never thought possible. A little boy was abducted and unspeakable things were done to him. The little bubble that was my hometown was exposed to something we thought only happened in big cities. The little boy is ok, he's healing best he can. The town came together and I do believe there will be a time everyone is healed from it. It makes a difference having support. <3
