Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Hair Tutorial

The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show aired the other night, and it featured soft, fresh makeup and relaxed waves, a bit of a break from the usual VS look. Today, I'm going to share how to create the hairstyle at home.

The key to this look is the Beachwaver, by celeb hairstylist Sarah Potempa. This is what was used on the models at the show. What makes this different than a usual curling iron is that it rotates in either direction. There's a short video at the end to demonstrate.

You can get one at ULTA. I had a chance to try out the S1 version and loved it. It's an Allure Mag Winner! Of any motorized curling product, this is hands down my fave. I've had to practically pry it from the hands of those who have tried it, including my sister, who has wavy hair. They all liked how easy it was to use. I even did my ultimate test of Make a Guy Try It. He did it perfectly on my hair the first try!

How To:
  • Step 1: Be a VS model with perfect hair, extensions, long layers in hair, etc. Just kidding. I'm working with what I have here, so the first thing is to create a center part. I don't like that on me, so I'm doing an off-center one.

Time to add texture:
  • If you're dealing with first day (or in my case 4th day) hair, adding some dry shampoo or volumizing powder will give hair some texture. Spray onto palms and then scrunch hair. Don't forget the roots for volume.
  • I like to do one half of my hair first. Take a 1 inch section on the right side of your head and clamp down, as pictured above.

Here's what it should look like in the next step:
  • Hold the RIGHT arrow and hair will spin to the roots. Hold for 5-10 seconds and release. I set mine for 350, which will do for most hair types. There are two speeds on the Beachwaver S1, so you can set it for fast or slow. If I do fast, I'm done in around 6 minutes. Slow: 10.

Here's what the curl will look like.
  • Repeat for the rest of the right side. Then, for the left, click the LEFT arrow to curl the left side of your face.
Allow curls to cool and then add a volumizing spray, like the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. Also recommend Sally Hershberger's version (literally the same for $10 cheaper. Both are at Sephora). Big Sexy Hair is another brand to try. I'm doing this instead of teasing my hair for volume. I add it to my roots and through out my hair. I break up the curls with my fingers.

Here's the finished product! This is a still from the video below. Please watch to see another version of creating this hairstyle:

Extra Elle:
  • This week has been dragging by for me--I am working at my day job longer than usual this week. Maybe that's a good thing because the weekend is going to be so busy.
  • All the presents are purchased but I haven't wrapped a thing yet.

  3. Your hair looks amazing - pinning! I'm a total dunce trying to achieve waves with my curling iron as I always get the dreaded clamp mark. So this product looks like a huge win for me <3

  13. You hair looks perfect with the curls, Elle! I think my hair is a little too short for this now so I haven't been using my curlers as much but I will keep this in mind once my hair is a little longer!

  22. You make this look so stinking easy in your video!!! It makes me want to run out and get one. I love how it just curls it around the wand for you. Sort of takes the guess work out of it I guess. I really want to start doing something with my hair. I have down and straight or pony tail as my two looks haha.

  31. You look so beautiful, I know it is about curls, but I loved the lipstick color! I liked your hair very much, but in my case I wouldn't add the volumizing spray, cause I have thin and dry hair, and if I add that spray I end up with a broom as hair. Thankfully yours is not that way and looks gorgeous!
