Trash or Stash: Brush & Beauty Blender Cleansers

If I had a bajillion dollars, I'd have someone clean my makeup brushes. It's one of those things I can't stand doing, but I'm always glad when it's over. But until that money happens, I'll keep testing out different brush cleaners to see what works the best. I've got 3 that I tested out, $9 and under. So should I trash them or keep them in my stash? Let's find out:

First up, Essential Tools Makeup Cleaner

  • $5.92
  • Walmart
  • 4 oz
  • Consistency: clear shampoo
  • Fragrance: very slight, like shampoo--I didn't mind it
  • Cleaning Ability
    • Powder Products--yes
    • Liquid--yes
    • Cream--it took a while
  • Would I repurchase: If in a pinch, which actually is the reason I bought it
Daiso Detergent for Puff and Sponge

  • $2+
  • 80 ml
  • Daiso stores (CA), Amazon, Ebay (I strongly suggest Ebay)
  • Consistency: liquid
  • Fragrance: no
  • Cleaning Ability:
    • I tested this with beauty blenders and it was AMAZING. Normally I use solid cleansers, but this did an even better job. Really impressed.
  • Would I repurchase: YES
  • $9
  • Online, Walmart, ULTA
  • 5.1 0z
  • Consistency: Very thick gel
  • Fragrance: Very slight
  • Cleaning Ability:
    • Powder: yes
    • Liquid: did ok
    • Cream: not that great
  • Would I repurchase: no
  • It should be noted that the RT and ET are made by the same company, with virtually the same ingredients.  I don't think I would repurchase either (trash) but the Daiso is a must-have for me (stash).
What's your favorite brush cleaner?

Extra Elle:
  • Speaking of cleaning (ugh) one of the perks?? of being my friend is that I can do pore extractions on you. This was my wild Thursday night, y'all. Completely gross (yet fascinating).

  1. Thanks for sharing your reviews of these. I need to be more diligent when it comes to cleaning my brushes. :)

  2. Good to know! I will definitely be getting the Daiso one! I've just been using gentle shampoo, but it only does an OK job. Thanks for sharing!

  3. i have the MAC brush cleanser and love it. you're so right - it's the worst! happy friday girl!

    xoxo cheshire kat

  4. I'd buy that Daiso one if I can find it here. Right now, I just use baby shampoo. And yeah...I hate cleaning brushes too, but it's a necessary evil:D

  5. I tend to rely on at home cleansers. Though the Daiso is cost effective so worth it to have on hand.

  6. I actually love cleaning makeup brushes! I would clean yours in a heartbeat :) I actually use Dr Bronner's magic soap and it's so easy and works really well.

  7. Good to know... never heard of these. Happy Friday!

  8. I am right there with you on cleaning brushes. I know it has to be done but I hate doing it! I'll have to check out the Daiso one! <3, Pamela Sequins & Sea Breezes

  9. Dude. I love watching pore extractions. I'm a sick bastard, lololol
I usually clean mine with face wash... is that weird?? lol

  10. Pore extraction? That sound so medical... & scary...
I never even think about cleaning brushes... kinda gross really.

  11. Pore extractions? Me and my large pores are very intrigued! Happy Friday gurlie <3

  12. I can't STAND cleaning my brushes!! I usually just stick with baby shampoo, does the trick and it's inexpensive.

  13. Elle, where would I be without you? I didn't even know you could by cleaners for your brushes! I always have so much to learn from you!!!!

  14. I hate cleaning my brushes, I'm totally going to try that Daiso one.

  15. Pore extractions? Sounds like something I need lol! I totally need to grab that Daiso Detergent for Puff and Sponge. I mean $2 and you recommend it, why not?!?!?

  16. I'd be a really happy girl if someone could clean my makeup brushes for me too! I'm currently using a Japonesque solid brush cleanser but I'd really like to check out the Daiso one.

  17. I will definitely keep the Daiso cleanser in mind for my Beauty blenders! The only thing that's worked for me on the in the BB solid cleanser but it's so dang expensive. I haven't read good reviews on the real techniques cleanser!

  18. I am currently happy with my cleanser from Body Escentuals but this is still a helpful; post if I need to switch up. =)

    Happy Friday the 13th, Elle!

    Ada. =)

  19. I have the solid cleanser for my beauty blender and when I'm in a pinch have been using shampoo. I'll definitely need to try the Daiso!

  20. I HATE HATE HATE cleaning my brushes too..hence why I haven't is farrr too long..im almost ashamed lol. The Daisio one sounds like the winner. I love using the Beauty Blender Solid Cleanser and Cinema Secrets.

  21. Wow, such a great in depth review.
I must run to my nearest Daiso to pick this up.
    Happy weekend :-)

  22. I agree cleaning brushes is not a fun job, but it is a must! Great reviews, I need a cost efficient cleanser!

  23. Ugh, I hate cleaning my makeup brushes too, and I probably don't do it as often as I should. Good to know about the good one and the two flops.

  24. Cleaning brushes is such a chore. I've heard the Daiso cleaner is good, but I haven't seen it at mine the times I have gone. I'll have to ask the next time I'm there.

  25. I hate admitting this but I totally love pore extractions too! Yes...that RT one is such trash UGH. I will be picking up the Daiso one because a Daiso just opened up by me yay! Thanks for that rec.

  26. I've gotta hunt down that Daiso detergent on Amazon! It's so inexpensive as well.:-)

  27. I also hate cleaning my brushes. Have a great weekend.

  28. I use just regular soap and I know I need to invest in an actual cleanser!! I need to check these out.

  29. I hate cleaning my brushes too. And this reminds me that I need to clean my brushes asap. :/
    Sincerely, Sara

  31. amazing products! Thanks for sharing the review:)

  32. Oh, I understand you! Just yesterday I bought a tool, not a cleanser though, to clean my brushes. It is like a glove that makes work easier, but like you said, I would rather pay someone to do that :)

  33. This reminds me I really need to clean my makeup brushes... How bad is it that I normally use shampoo?

  34. I will have to check out the second on Ebay, thanks!

  35. I secretly love watching things come out of pores.... yes, yes, it's gross, but honestly I'd love to see a how-to post on that! I've been allergic to every brush cleanser I've tried. Baby shampoo seems to work the best for me and I always have it on had. (;
