This or That: Garnier 5 Second Blur Vs L'Oreal Pore Vanisher

Consider yesterday's post a little teaser for today! I shared these two primers (they were the first two shown on that post) there. I am forever on a quest to find THE perfect primer that erases my pores. Today I have two of the latest ones to hit the market. Let's check 'em out:

Garnier Skin Renew 5 Second Blur Instant Smoother
  • Claims to blur wrinkles, fine lines, flaws and visible pores.
    • In 5 seconds skin feels smoother, looks younger, and is more radiant
  • Directions: Spread a dime size amount of Garnier Skin Renew 5 Second Blur Instant Smoother over entire face. Wear it alone or apply makeup as usual. Before each use, shake tube downward for easier dispensing of product.
  • $14.99-$20 1 oz.
  • This reminds me of NYX's Pore Filler or Smashbox's colored primers. This does a decent job of minimizing the look of pores. Silica is the main ingredient, which is common in most primers, to give the slip and smooth appearance on skin. It also causes many, such as myself, to break out, so I don't wear it daily (other than for testing purposes). In fact, when I applied it all over, I had the tiniest pimple appear instantly.
  • I found it worked best if used only on areas that needed it--I can't wear this all over my face.
  • If you saw yesterday's post, this was the product that had the biggest ring around it. I found my skin did feel smoother. I wouldn't repurchase this but it was fun to try and test out.

L'Oreal Paris Youth Code™ Texture Perfector Pore Vanisher
  • Claims to instantly diminish the look of pores.
    • Micro-exfoliates to smooth skin’s surface and absorbs excess oil for 8 shine-free hours.
    • Over time: Strengthens and tightens to shrink the appearance of pores.
    • In 1 month: Shrinks actual pore size
  • Directions:  Smooth over entire face AM and PM. Use alone or as the last step in your skincare routine.
  • $19.99-$25 1.4 oz
  • This primer was also on yesterday's post. This is a thick and creamy texture, similar to Too Faced's Primed and Poreless, but with more of a moisturizer feel to it, kind of like Boots No.7 Wrinkle Filler and Primer.
  • You can't shrink pores, but the appearance can be altered, and I noticed no difference after using 1 month. I did notice that this did a great job in minimizing the appearance of pores. I tested it twice a day, but prefer wearing it only when wearing makeup.
  • Silica is in this, but it didn't have that slip. Some foundations applied better than others as this didn't sink into the skin like other primers. I liked wearing this alone.
  • I would repurchase.
This or That?
  • I definitely liked the L'Oreal version better, but felt I had to use more product to get the results I wanted. While my dry skin loved the medium-thick texture of this, it might be too much for oily skin (I suggest everyone try it if interested, just hang onto the receipt).
  • As always, these are my opinions, and I urge you to purchase and test the products yourself!

  2. Hey Elle! I have found that I can't use these products because they clog my pores, and I breakout. Did these have that effect on you?

  4. Great post!! I've noticed that when I was using a silica based primer my face broke out as well. It took me a whole to figure that out! I may try this loreal one though!

  10. I have yet to find the *perfect* primer. I do love MUFE's HD primer. It works so well with their HD line (which is fabulous for covering up my sunspots!), but it's a bit pricey. I've yet to find a drug store alternative :(

  16. Great post! I had not heard anything about the Garnier 5 Second Blur, but I've heard great things about the L'Oreal. I may give the L'Oreal a try after I finish up my sample of Benefit's Porefessional. xoxo Lauren from WillSingForMakeup

  18. I tried the L'Oreal version recently and it definitely did not work with my oily skin. I am also always on the lookout for products to help minimize and/or conceal pores.

  26. Even without this comparison, I'd still go for L'Oreal. I don't have anything against Garnier products. I just am a loyal patron of L'Oreal.

  33. Ack! I'm so behind in the world of beauty products. I had no idea you could get pore vanishers. I'd really like to try one of these, especially on my nose!
