DIY: Brown Sugar Scrub

I like to save a few bucks when I can, and when I saw Fresh's Brown Sugar Body Polish for$65, I knew I could make my own for way cheaper. Sugar scrub is excellent for exfoliating dry skin and is safe enough to use daily. It is so quick and easy to make. You can even give as a gift (see my label at the end of this post).

Ingredients:
  • Brown Sugar
  • Baby Oil
  • Essential Oils
  • Fork
  • Seal-tight container
Method:
  • Pour 1 to 2 cups of brown sugar into container
  • Add 1/2 to 1 cup of baby oil
  • Mix well. Add more sugar depending on desired consistency.
  • Add 1/2 of small bottle of oil and stir well. (I like mine to really smell, so I use a whole bottle. I used vanilla cream for this tutorial).
  • Seal tightly in container to keep moisture away.
  • Oil will settle to the bottom, so stir before using. Keep a crafting/Popsicle stick nearby if desired to aid in mixing.
Options:
  • Light brown sugar instead of dark is my preference; however, for this tutorial I used brown.
  • I prefer scented baby oil, such as lavender or cocoa butter. I used aloe vera.
  • Just about any other oil can be used instead of baby oil (almond oil smells great). I used baby oil to keep costs down.
  • Vanilla extract can be used instead of essential oils.
  • Oils can be purchased easily. I get mine from Bath & Body Works or from Whole Foods. Oils are also sold at craft stores. If possible, get an oil to match the scent of baby oil (for example lavender baby oil & lavender essential oil).
  • For an even more exhilarating experience, add finely ground coffee beans or sea salt.
  • Reader Bre commented to use plant oils instead. Excellent idea! Thanks, Bre.

Giving as a gift? Print out the label above and attach to jar.

  3. that is a fantastic idea! yeah i use scrubs, mostly on my face to make my skin softer, a few times a week, so this is a great trick. and that label is so cute, what a nice touch!

  4. I use to use body scrubs and then I stopped for whatever reason :o/ I'll have to get back to using them! They always left my skin silky smooth :) Great DIY version!

  5. This is a great DIY! I was just thinking about trying a brown sugar lip scrub these past few days, but a body scrub is even better!
I think olive oil would work just as well instead of baby oil, it's very moisturizing without leaving the skin feeling greasy, and would make the recipe completely natural. Definitely a must-try!

  7. DIY scrubs are great, but I would never ever use baby oil. Mineral oil only coats the skin, it doesn't soften or moisturize. You should definitely do your suggested swap of light plant oils-it will still be less expensive than Fresh's scrub.

    Have a great weekend!

  10. I'm not sure if the brown sugar would make it to the scrub ... I like to snack on it way too much! *blushes*

  12. I make a scrub with brown sugar and extra virgin olive oil with rosemary, lavender and tea tree all the time and I love it! It's kind of smelly but it makes my skin happy.

  15. This is a great recipe. I would just make sure to use a different oil like one of the others that you suggested. I used to use baby oil and then I found out that it is 100% mineral oil which is produced as a by product of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. Yuk! Manufactures use it because it is so incredibly cheap. Isn't it amazing what is allowed to go into a lot of the products we use? I really like your blog. Glad I found it!

  19. I used baby oil in the scrubs I made. I did notice as my coffee scrub wss making my legs a little greasy. So I use it now to scrub and shave my legs. Then wash it off. It does make my legs soft though. The inly thing I should have done was look at different reviews before making it as holiday gifts for family.
