Best Drugstore Frizz Fighters

how to get rid of frizz

Hi, I'm Elle. And let me introduce you to my hair. The bottom layer is super straight and fine. The top layer is naturally wavy and holds curl for days. And then, there are the sides. They are dry, coarse, and very, very frizzy. My hair has always grown in like this. And my goal is to make all of it look cohesive, and that means using something for frizz.

I scoured the drugstores for products designed to fight frizz. After months and months of testing, I can't wait to share my results. I tested these in winter, spring, and summer. I tested these on windy days, rainy days, humid days, super hot days, and even at the beach. I tested these in steamy showers. I tested these with certain kids who love to torment play with my hair. I'm tested out!

frizz hair products reviews
I tested a variety of frizz-fighting products like creams, serums, and oils. To make my hair straight and frizz-free, I prefer doing a blow out with a round brush, and I used that hairstyle when testing these frizz--fighters. Tutorial for easy blow out at home is here.

cream to fight frizz
L'Oreal Smooth Intense X Treme Straight Creme
  • Note: When I began testing these in November of 2014, this was still available. It has been reformulated as Smooth Intense Ultimate Straight Perfecting Balm. I did test that and had the same results despite only using it a few times.

    • This worked decently at frizz (worked well at straightening my hair) but the 5 year old disliked the scent. ;)

john frieda smooth primer review

John Frieda Frizz Ease Beyond Smooth Frizz-Immunity Primer
  • Non silicone formula with pure coconut oil and frizz immunity comples that improves hair with each use
  • $10.49

    • I am a huge John Frieda fan, and after seeing such positive reviews, I had to get this. It was awful on me and made my hair on the sides even frizzier. It was the most expensive of those tested and I really disliked it.

    • My hair usually dislikes serums and prefers creams, so I was shocked that I loved this one the most. It gave me shiny and smooth hair. It lasted the best through all of my testing. And it was the least expensive!

    • This had a great scent to it, but just didn't deliver enough for fighting frizz.

Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment review
Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment
  • Sleek, smooth, deep conditioning of argan oil from Morocco without any oily residue

    • This smells amazing and gave me the shiniest hair. It worked well on frizz but it was borderline oily hair for me. In the pic below it looks amazing, but trust me my hair was really oily there. It did not work at straightening/smoothing my hair. It stayed wavy.

Loreal, Tresame, John Freida, Herbal Essences, Garnier Fructis
Here are examples of each product after 1 week and after humidity exposure.
My two best frizz tips:

  • If a product has alcohol listed in the first 5 ingredients, skip it. I've found that alcohol dries out and frizzes my hair faster than anything.
  • I say this all the time, but I swear by a satin pillowcase. No friction. Here's a picture of how my hair looks when I wake up. Ignore the lack of makeup, hehe. And you should follow me on Insta already!

What do you use in your hair?

  1. I'm so going to have to see if I can find these product. My hair is a frizz mess when I don't put anything in it.

  2. Girl! You are speaking my language! I am constantly trying out anti-frizz products. I love that you included how the five year old did not like the smell. LOL!

  3. Great post! I've tried so many frizz-fighting products & really love the Kerastase oils! Not exactly budget friendly though xx

  4. That contest sounds insane (I wish I weren't in Scotland at the time, otherwise I'd enter). My hair is very thin and fine and very frizz prone, I've never tried a couple of these products but that John Frieda one also worked horribly for me.

  5. Great review girl! That Tresemme one sounds amazing and made your hair look fabulous! Not that it doesn't always!

  6. WOW! This is such a great post and my favorite is the side by side comparison photos. I have tried Frizz Ease, but I haven't tried any of these other products! I have naturally curly hair, so this will help me out!

  7. I use the Garnier myself and love it - the results are brilliant!

  8. Summer is definitely the time for frizz! Thanks for reviewing all the different products. I use fructis and it does help!

  9. I swear by the garnier fructis oil - i've gone through about 4 bottles now and always repurchase! xo, biana -BlovedBoston

  10. I mean for those in the US that giveaway cannot be beat :)

  11. Vow this post was really helpful... my hair is terribly frizzy nw a days !!

  12. I avoid straightening my hair at all costs during the summer because of hair frizz. I will have to give the Tresemme a try!

  13. i tried the John Frieda one yeeears ago and it was so horrible i just assumed they would all be like that. love the side by side pictures of your hair, super helpful! i will definitely be trying the Garnier and Tresemme ones!

  14. I'm going to have to try the Tresemme product cause this year my hair has been super frizzy. I have been using an old garnier product and once it's finished I'll give the Tresemme Keratin Infusing Smoothing Serum a try.

  15. I love it when you test so many products and give us the best option, Elle, I'll be picking up the serum from Tresemme!

  16. Wow these found great. I will recommend to my mum!

  17. I love John Frieda so I'm sad that one doesn't work well!! I'll have to try some of these- im just using coconut oil on my hair right now because it's super damaged

  18. Love this review! I will definitely seek out the Tresemme for my frizzy locks!

  19. This post is so helpful, as I am constantly dealing with frizz. It's been so bad this summer that I'm looking for something new to try. Tresemme Keratin Infusing Smoothing Serum is now on my shopping list!

  20. I battled frizz for years until I discovered John Freida's smoothing serum (not the same product you have listed here). It is awesome. I've used it for over a decade. I also really like the It's a 10 Miracle Leave In product. I've tried so many different ones over the years and those two have been my favorites. I'll have to try the Tresemme serum! I'm curious to see how it does in my hair.

  21. My hair can get slightly frizzy in the humidity sometimes and these are some of my favorite drugstore brands - definitely need to pop in and pick one of these up!

  22. Great post, my frizz has been out of control. I have tired everything and really nothing has worked as well as I hoped. I just got the living proof frizz stuff to see if that helps. I don't have high hopes tho. Most frizz products seem to just make my frizz worse.

  23. Some how you (once again) read my mind and come out with a post just when I was needing it. Since getting my hair permed, I wasn't sure what products to use to help my over all curl. I was using the Suave Weather cream (another awesome suggestion by you) and I still love it, but I think something else a little stronger would work better for my new found frizzy curls. Especially in the hot months. I really love the way the Garnier looks on your hair! I think that would give just enough softness. Do you think it would work for someone with a perm? I hope you can reply, I know it the past you said it wouldn't let you and I'm not too sure why. lol --I clicked the Notify me icon and the "Follow-up comments will be sent to ..... " pops up. I'm not sure what I'm messing up.

  24. I dont have frizz - I have the flats!! But my daughter loves sleek straight hair - I think the Tresseme sounds like it will suit her. Thanks for testing these out for us!! Susan

  25. I have actually never used a frizz fighter! My hair is so flat and gets oily easy so I am scared to use one! Although with the humidity I should definitely try!

  27. I have been loving the new loreal paris line lately! These sound like great products!

  28. Great review!! I think you've convinced me to try the Tresemme Keratin serum. My hair has been a hot frizzy mess in this hot and humid FL weather. It has a great price point too.

  29. Great review!! I think you've convinced me to try the Tresemme Keratin serum. My hair has been a hot frizzy mess in this hot and humid FL weather. It has a great price point too.

  30. I like the John Frieda one!! I'm currently using OGX coconut oil, but I periodically splurge on John Freida.

  31. I was gonna try that John Frieda one! I think I'll go for the L'Oreal one instead. Thanks for this, Elle:)

  32. I have so many straightening products under my cabinet. They either are too creamy or make me look like a oil head. sigh.
I'm going to try the Tresemme though

  33. Great post. I have the Garnier Frutis and liked it. My sister has super curly hair and uses Tresemme, and I think she said the same thing about the John Frieda.

  34. I don't really deal with much frizz thankfully, but this is a great review for those who do.

  35. My hair is crazy frizzy! I've used that Garnier Fructis product before and I really liked it!

  36. I have such an issue with being frizzy yet my hair being too thin that it usually ends up oily like you described in that last one. I am totally going out and getting Tresemme Keratin Infusing Smoothing Serum next time I am at the store! Thanks for all your hard testing work :)

  37. I've been using the L'Oreal one along with the shampoo and conditioner from the same line and I'm loving all of them used together. It's worked wonders for my fair!

  38. I saw you working on this post on Snapchat! Looks like really good products to fight frizz, for sure.

  39. Your hair looks beautiful in all the pictures!! Good to know about alcohol - I had no idea :) Noted!

  40. I'm seriously always looking for styling products (even though I'm already using two right now...). That tresemme one is going on my list!

  41. Fight the frizz! This is a great post! I have a big problem with frizz, so I appreciate you testing all of these products! Looks like I'll be getting the Tresemme serum!

  42. great reviews, Elle! ATL humid is my hair's enemy and I have the worst summertime frizz! always looking for new products to try :)

  43. I'm sooooo glad you wrote this post!! I have the worst hair in the summer. I have to try out the Tresemme serum! For that price, I'm willing to try out.

Although in the picture, 1 and 5 look the best, but creme does horror to my hair and makes it look soo greasy. I usually use Paul Mitchell Frizz Ease, but I'm going to try that Tresemme one out.

  44. My curly humid touching going heywire hair will probably thank me on for any of these!
I swear I cant seem to take it back to its cage nowadays :(

    Allie | RainyAllie

  45. I actually haven't really had to use an antifrizz product before. In which I'm very glad for, since it's not like my hair is always frizzy.

  46. This post is a lifesaver! I spend fortunes on high end anti frizz products, it's very good to know that some cheaper options actually work!

  47. I really appreciate how thoroughly you test products, Elle! Battling frizz is the story of my life. I'm definitely going to look into the Tresame serum! :-)

  48. I defenitely need to try the L'Oreal. My hair has some serious frizz right now!

  49. You are officially making me want to get a satin pillowcase!

  50. I was happy to see this post because my hair gets so frizzy in the summer! I'm surprised the Tresemme worked the best and it was the least expensive!

  51. I needed to read this Elle because I've been fighting the frizz like CRAZY lately (thanks wet, muggy summer!). I think I'll pick up the Tressemme on my next Target trip, that sounds like just what I need. (Oh and a satin pillowcase too!)

  52. I really like the Tresemme serum, I use it often. I found the same with the Garnier it leaves my hair really oily so I save it for more of a conditioning treatment day.

  53. I really want to try the Tresemme Keratin Infusing Smoothing Serum! Sounds like a very great product.
