DIY: Jewelry Rack

Level: Beginner

Ok, so I have a wonderful jewelry box, but it's overflowing with necklaces and often ended up like this:

I got really frustrated of constantly untangling them or wearing the same necklace over & over due to my impatience. I finally decided to make a jewelry rack for my longer necklaces and those that tangle easily. The rest of the necklaces will remain the jewelry box.

Requirements: cheap and using as many of the items I already have. I decided I wanted the rack on the back of my bathroom closet door, so the look of it didn't really matter since only I will see it. If the jewelry rack would be visible, I would've made it more aesthetically-pleasing. I also didn't want any nails or screws to come through to the other side of the door.

I liked how the drawer pulls on my cabinets/drawers (from Ikea) looked and wanted to use some as a jewelry rack but I knew the screws would show through the other side. What to do?

I got out a level, the handles, a hammer, and I had some mug hooks. These are tiny enough that they don't show through to the other side. I nailed (yes nailed, not screwed) in the hooks. I hung the handles on the hooks. I then hung S-hooks from Ikea on the handles. My jewelry hung from the purple S-hooks. Problem solved! Yes, the hooks are purple and don't match anything, but since I already had the hooks, and I'm the only one opening the door, it doesn't bother me.

I'm pleased with the way it turned out, and I like having it hidden, as opposed to hanging on the wall. My necklaces are gifts from loved ones, treasures of my travels, and memories from family. And that's the way I like it!

How do you hang your necklaces? Are they on display? Or hidden? What piece means the most to you?

PS--I just wanted to thank those who have served in the military. It's Veterans Day in America.

  1. This is something I've been trying to figure out for quite some time. Right now, I have all my jewelry in a jewelry box, but it's hard for me to find stuff... AND my necklaces always end up getting tangled, no matter how carefully I put them in!

This looks like a great idea! You can actually see what you have!

  2. This is a great idea! I even like the purple hooks and how they make the whole thing brighter!
I did something similar a few months ago, except I bought a large cork board that I covered with some fabric, and I hung my necklaces on some clear pushpins.

  6. That turned out great! I keep my longer necklaces on a belt/tie holder (not sure what it is) so they don't tangle. Works out great!
